Did you know?

The Bronze Birch Borer (Agrilus Anxius) is becoming more common in Lethbridge and can quickly kill weakened birch trees if left untreated. Here's a few things you need to be aware of.

Signs of an Infestation:

- Thinning canopy and dying upper branches.
- Small D-shaped exit holes in the trunk.
- Raised bark or cracks from tunneling larvae.
- Rusty looking residue around exit holes on the bark.
- Increased woodpecker activity.

How to Protect Your Birch Trees:

- Keep trees healthy with proper watering and mulching.
- Prune dead or infested branches.
- Consider preventative insecticide treatments.
- Early action can save your trees.

Dutch Elm Disease in Lethbridge: What you need to know

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is a serious fungal infection that affects elm trees, spreading through beetles and root connections between trees. Once infected, trees show wilting, yellowing, and eventually die. Unfortunately, there is no cure, so prevention is key.

How Can You Protect Your Elm Trees?

Prune Only in Winter:
Lethbridge has strict elm pruning rules—pruning season ends on March 31. After this, pruning is banned until October to prevent beetle attraction.

Dispose of Wood Properly:
Never store or transport elm firewood, as it can carry the disease.

Watch for Symptoms:
If you notice wilting leaves or dead branches, take note and contact an Arborist who can take the next steps in care of the tree

By following these steps, we can help keep Lethbridge’s elm trees healthy for generations to come. If your elms need pruning, book before March 31 to stay compliant!

Welcome to Wessex Tree Care!

We’re a tree care company here in Lethbridge, Alberta, founded in 2023 by Mitch Stainer. Mitch got into tree care back in 2016 while working in Poole, England. From there, he completed an arboriculture apprenticeship and picked up a ton of experience working with local municipalities. After a few years, Mitch decided to go solo and became a contract climber for smaller local companies.

In 2020, Mitch moved to Victoria, BC, and worked with Bartlett Tree Experts, where he sharpened his skills in ornamental and fruit tree pruning. He spent the next 3 years in Coastal BC doing big tree and hazardous tree removals, and now he’s bringing all that expertise to Southern Alberta!
