𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 - 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 & 𝐂𝐮𝐛𝐬
The vision for this piece began with an interest in the popularity of reclaimed wood art and a desire to try my own hand at creating some of this artwork. I wanted it to have some of the features of the popular geometric style mountain-scapes but also wanted it to be more flowing and natural, not as rigidly confined in design. In my search for inspiration, I came across Art and Airplanes - Jynae's travels and creations and knew I had found it. Please check out her amazing work, she is truly a magnificent artist.
Once I had roughly sketched out the design, the true adventure began! I wanted all of the materials to be reclaimed wood and needed a supply that would be sufficient for the project. This led me to rescuing the materials from their destined fate of the landfill and repurposing them for the project. This also generally involves disassembling something, which can be a rather exhaustive and labour-intensive process. Some of the nails they used years ago are very stubborn and absolutely refuse to allow you to have that perfect piece of wood for your project!
After some considerable blood, sweat, tears and a few slivers, I now had the material I needed. Next came learning how to process it into something usable for the project. Many things were learned, reclaimed wood does not have straight edges or flat faces like new material. Milling can be a challenge, especially when you have a piece that has a unique knot or grain pattern that you think is perfect for part of your project. Obtaining that piece in a usable form can be quite challenging. Mistakes were made, pieces were rendered unusable, the firepit did receive a bit more wood than anticipated.
The assembly involved a huge amount of cutting and precise fitting to achieve the overall design. This was, for me, very enjoyable. Selecting pieces for their knots, grain pattern and color to fit into my design is an evolving process. Something totally unexpected were the nail holes. Incorporating them into the project became almost an obsession and I believe they accentuate the piece quite well.
All of the colors are natural, no stain or paint was used for the artwork. The frame is stained but only to separate it from the art. The entire project is clear coated satin to protect it but not alter the natural colors and textures. The piece measures 35-3/4 inches wide and 18 inches high. Had planned for 36 inches wide but mistakes were made, trimming was required.
My quite enjoyable and there will be more in the future.
