Job Summary: We are seeking dedicated and reliable Labourers to join our Hazardous Material Abatement and demolition team. The successful candidates will work on various projects involving the removal, containment, and disposal of hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, and mold. This is a physically demanding role that requires working in potentially hazardous environments while adhering to strict safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in the safe removal and disposal of hazardous materials
· Set up and maintain containment areas using appropriate materials
· Operate and maintain equipment such as negative air machines and HEPA vacuums
· Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
· Conduct pre- and post-abatement cleaning and site inspections
· Properly handle and dispose of hazardous waste
· Support the site supervisor and other team members as required
Qualifications:
· Previous experience in hazardous material abatement, construction, or demolition is an asset but not required
· Certification in asbestos abatement, mold remediation, or lead removal preferred but will train the right candidate if needed
· Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy materials
· Strong commitment to safety and following procedures
· Willingness to work in confined spaces and at heights
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Working Conditions:

At Assured, we take our game serious and when the opportunity to sharpen our skills presents itself, we’re on it. We had a couple days in the schedule and did we go fishing? NOPE… We spent it reviewing hygiene theory, components of the professional containment system and even broke out the lumber, poly, tools and practiced our craft, right in the back yard. When we come to your project, we’re ready and prepared to successfully complete you project.

Our crew works together and supports one another through the entire project as a team. Hazardous Materials Inventory...

Please forgive me, I usually try and write about topics in a way that’s fun and entertaining to read but this topic is of the utmost seriousness. It’s the very core of what we do and the consequences are great so humour would be ill placed here.

As per WorkSafeBC Regulation 20.112, before any demolition work can commence in the Province of BC, a Hazardous Materials Inventory (HMI) must be preformed by a qualified person and be available in writing to ensure worker protection. So, what this means is that a person or contractor in charge or directing workers is responsible for identifying all asbestos, lead based coatings, silica, PCB’s and other related hazardous materials that could possibly be disturbed prior to commencement of work. This document is to be available for all workers to review and refer to throughout the job as per regulation.

The importance of this to the Homeowner is because if we need to protect the worker with such stringent regulation, you also need to be protected in the same way. Starting a renovation without knowing what’s in the materials, where hazardous materials start/stop or what risk they pose, could not only expose workers but yourself and family as well to a potentially dangerous substance because you didn’t know it was there… Hazardous materials can have long term, permanent or even fatal effects and need to be identified in a way that’s clear and easily referenced.

Responsible contractors know and support this thinking because they care. It’s what guides their activities and often is the basis for how their scope of work goes together. Asbestos related illnesses are the #1 cause of worker deaths every single year and that’s because some contractors promote it as a cash grab or a hoax, its not and the suffering is real. When picking a contractor, look for one that cares enough about you and his people to identify all hazardous materials prior to work commencing so those hazardous substances don’t get spread all over your home and content.

We at Assured Industries support this by making available a comprehensive Hazardous Materials Identification from a third party who acts without conflict. They will test all suspect materials through accepted analytical means, identify areas of concern with clear communication to where the hazard starts and stops, quantify the amount of material that exists so risk can be applied to the associated materials. We support this so much that we are even willing to come out at no charge to help contractors interpret the report and assist in the scoping of desired work to avoid unnecessary exposure. I’ve met those dragging oxygen tanks behind them and heard families talk about the lives they used to enjoy before the change or how they miss that person, please don’t become another story.

Unless you have been ASSURED your hazardous materials are properly identified, don’t start the work.

Lead

Lead is used in many things during construction and can be found in roof vents, piping, soldered joints, bell & spigot drains and much more, but the biggest use is paint. It’s been known for a long time that if you want bright long lasting durable colours, lead is key… After it was found that paint on furniture and toys was giving lead poisoning to children due to ingestion from chewing things, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) developed regulations that prohibited the importation of paints and painted items that had concentrations of lead greater than 90 parts per million (PPM).

Often the laboratories that test for lead will reference this standard for the purposes of pass or fail criteria, but this is a bit misleading as WorkSafeBC does not recognize this standard for the protection of workers. Sure, this standard will protect children and pregnant women from exposure but why not the worker? The answer is surprisingly simple, Pregnant women and children don’t mechanically cut, sand, grind, torch or use excavators on lead coated surfaces…. So those working with lead coated materials are still required under The Regulation to perform a Risk Assessment that captures job task, condition of the material, route of exposure (ingestion, inhalation, or absorption), methods required to work on them, quantities and the controls needed to minimize exposure before work can commence.

Another potential issue with lead is the waste management. Certain types of lead material have the risk of being leachable, meaning that after the wastes are taken to a facility, they can leak out into the ground or water table/supply. The Ministry of Environment requires that lead based materials be tested for leachability to protect waste sites from accidentally cross contaminating the natural environment or water supply.

Please have your renovation materials tested for asbestos prior to removal and have a qualified contractor handle the safe removal of the asbestos containing materials.
