1) Creates the ideal surface profile:
- A shot blaster propels small steel shot at the concrete, removing contaminants and roughening the surface
- This produces a uniform texture that helps epoxy mechanically bond to the concrete.
2) Removes contaminants effectively:
- It can remove dirt, weak surface laitance, old coatings, curing compounds, and light contamination more thoroughly than many grinding setups
- Better contaminant removal reduces the risk of epoxy delamination or peeling
3) More uniform preparation:
- Grinding can leave swirl marks or uneven profiles if not performed carefully
- Shot blasting tends to create a more consistent surface across large areas
4) Dust control:
- Modern shot blasters operate with integrated vacuum systems that recycle the steel shot and collect dust simultaneously
