Most homeowners don't know how old their heating system is — or what the signs are that it's getting close to the end of its life.

Here's a general guide: 📋

🔹 Gas furnace — 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance
🔹 Heat pump — 15 to 20 years with regular service
🔹 Central air conditioner — 12 to 15 years

Age alone isn't the whole picture though. Here are the signs worth paying attention to, regardless of how old your system is:

⚠️ Your heating bills have increased noticeably — without a change in how you use the system
⚠️ The system is cycling on and off more frequently than it used to
⚠️ Some rooms are consistently warmer or colder than others
⚠️ You're calling for repairs more often — especially in the last 2–3 years
⚠️ The system takes longer to reach the temperature you've set

None of these mean you need to replace your system immediately. But they are worth a conversation before heating season — especially if two or three of them apply.

Before you fire up your furnace for the first time this fall — a quick reminder that's worth sharing. 👇

Carbon monoxide (CO) is colourless and odourless. You can't see it, smell it, or taste it. And every fall, furnaces that have sat idle all summer are turned on without anyone checking whether they're venting properly.

Two things every Okanagan homeowner should do right now:

✅ Test your CO detector — press the test button and confirm it's working. If it's more than 5–7 years old, replace it. CO detectors have a lifespan.

✅ When you run your furnace for the first time, pay attention. A burning dust smell for the first few minutes is normal — that's just dust burning off. What's NOT normal: a persistent burning smell, a rotten egg odour, or any chemical smell. If you notice any of these, turn the furnace off and call a technician.

If your furnace hasn't been serviced in a while, a fall tune-up is the best way to make sure everything is venting correctly and running safely heading into winter.

Here's a quick tip that makes a real difference when smoke rolls in — and most homeowners don't know about it. 👇

On your thermostat, there are two fan settings:

❌ AUTO — the blower fan only runs when your system is actively heating or cooling
✅ ON — the blower fan runs continuously, circulating air through your filter at all times

During a smoke event, switching from AUTO to ON means your air filter is working around the clock — not just when the AC kicks in. If you have a good quality MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter installed, this single change can noticeably improve the air your family is breathing indoors.

Two steps to take right now if it's smoky outside:

1️⃣ Check your filter — if it hasn't been changed in the last month, replace it with a MERV 11 or MERV 13
2️⃣ Switch your thermostat fan from AUTO to ON
