Unused chimneys can cause more problems than people realize.

With heat pumps and electric heat becoming more common, old chimneys often turn into draft points, insulation weak spots, leak risks, and maintenance issues.

They can also cast shade on solar panels and reduce usable roof space.

For this project, we removed the chimney, repaired the decking, sealed the roof properly, and prepared the home for a cleaner, more efficient roof system.

This homeowner planned on getting solar installed on the back side of their home.

They wanted metal roofing underneath the solar panels on the back portion of the roof.

For the front, they decided to go with a shorter-term shingle option. On the back, they upgraded to 26-gauge metal roofing where the solar panels will be installed.

Don’t make the mistake of installing 30+ year solar panels over 15–25 year shingles.

When panels are installed over shingles that need replacing early, it can mean removing the solar system later just to replace the roof underneath.
