Wandering the garden coffee in hand and listening to the birds is one of our favourite morning rituals. Why does birdsong make us feel so calm? 🐦🌿

From an evolutionary perspective, birdsong has long signaled something important to humans: safety. Our ancestors learned that when birds were singing, the environment was likely peaceful β€” no predators nearby, no storms approaching, and daylight conditions were stable. A quiet forest could mean danger, but a chorus of chirping birds meant it was safe to relax, gather food, and connect with others. Choose your metaphor πŸ˜‰

Today, our brains still respond to those natural cues. Listening to birdsong can help lower stress, improve mood, and gently bring us back to the present moment. Nature has been supporting human wellness for thousands of years.

Do yourself a favour today and grab a snack, sit on a bench in a garden or under your feeders in the sunshine and let the birds sooth your buzzing nervous systems. We could all use the break 🫢

What a great article! Planting a short season potato super early allows you to dig them fully and succession plant a whole whack of other crops before the first frost. Broccoli, carrots, lettuce, beets are just a few of the things you can replace your potatoes with. It's a fantastic way to maximize food production in small spaces!

Even though you may be planning ahead for your vegetable garden now, it's a good idea to also think ahead. For example, if you dug your potato crop early enough in the growing season, you may have time left to establish a second crop in the garden. Here's what you can plant after potatoes. https://savvygardening.com/what-to-plant-after-potatoes/

In typical gardener fashion, we always seem to be one step behind all things not "garden" this time of year. We would be remiss however to not congratulate our vice chair and Master Gardener Tracey Smyth on another successful presentation at the Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library last Saturday. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!

Keep your eyes peeled for her next presentation on how to tackle common garden pests πŸͺ²πŸ›πŸͺ²

It's the end of an "era"! The Sea Spray Board wants to give a serious shout out to our student placement Robyn Dearman. We stumbled into this relationship about three months ago via a random Facebook message looking for potential volunteers or board members and what happen next was pure kismet! Robyn was not only interested in being involved but was in need of an eight week placement for her Community Development degree!

Eight weeks later? Robyn has an A+ and we got social media help, grant applications, research, proposals, program planning, fundraising outreach and best of all??? A brand new board member! Robyn may be leaving us as a student but will stay on to help with youth initiatives and other projects. And we couldn't be more thrilled. Robyn, you have been a pure gem and such a benefit to this feisty start up. We are so very grateful 😊

Trivia night on Tuesday was not just a success, it was a whole whack of fun!!! We cannot say thank you enough to Will Gilligan and his hilarious trivia questions. I don't know how he did it, but he made garden trivia a blast for even the non gardeners who came out to support us.

Thank you so much to all of the players! Your fees are literally going to help feed people right here in this community πŸ₯°

Thank you to our rock star sponsors for helping us put together wonderful prize packages for the winners 🀩

And a huge shout out to our student placement Robyn Dearman for her serious hustle getting those sponsorships secured. This woman is a firecracker πŸ‘πŸ”₯πŸ’₯

Looks like we'll be doing it all again this fall!!
