Last big haul of produce to the Old School today for their food pantry. Over 250lbs total 🎃🥕🥔🍅

We are plum tuckered but it felt great to help out ahead of Thanksgiving!

Last night we were so excited to roast our first delicata squash of the season! Womp, womp....underripe 😩 Knowing when to pick a ripe squash is a bit of an art. The buttercup on the left? Shiny skin, green stem, and you can pierce the skin with a fingernail. That friends is an underripe fruit. The squash on the right? Dull skin, tough and can't be pierced with a fingernail, and a brown stem. That one is good to go! You can also wait for the vine to turn brown to be certain.

Now, squash will ripen a bit once picked but they should be well
on their way to continue successfully. Cure them with the stem on in a warm, well ventilated space in a single layer for 7-14 days and store for winter ☺️

"I wish I had a yard to garden in". It's something we hear a lot in our conversations about this community initiative. If you ask us? The next best thing? A trip to the Annapolis Valley in late summer early fall! A 10lb bag of beets for $7 you say??? Yes please!!!

We've been watching their page for a few weeks now and the deals have been stellar. Plan a road trip with some friends, grab some mason jars, and can/freeze to your heart's content 🍅🌽🌶🍑

It's that time of year! We are preserving the fruits of our labour. Literally! Thinking ahead to next season, "Growing Your Own Marinara" is at the top of our list for a new workshop.

This involves a bit of planning and planting ahead. If you are interested in this type of workshop, your first step is planting fall garlic! 🧄🧄🧄

Keep an eye out for what we still have in stock for seed garlic varieties and prepare for clinking in your future 🍅

We don't know how Dolly felt about Gardening, but we do know her message rings true for our community as well. Thank you to all of the people leading and looking for the good and the joy. Next workshop is all about seed saving!

In true "be present fashion" we forgot to take photos last night, but We want to give a huge shout out to our secretary Nancy Zwaagstra for putting on a fabulous harvesting and canning workshop at the Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library. Well done Nancy!

We had a lively discussion about how canning and preserving really change the "waste" game in home gardening and Nancy left some of her favourite canning recipes as leave behinds for the lucky folks who took part. We did have a request for a tomato jam recipe. This one is a total keeper!

There will never be "too many tomatoes" again ☺️🍅

Tomato jam is like the best ketchup you've ever tasted. It's sweet, savory, and just a little bit spicy. Try it with crackers & goat cheese!
