Partial perimeter drain on this Lawrencetown home.

Basement walkout means the back half is not necessary.

The front half however is problematic. The walls are showing signs of leaking and the sill of the stud wall is rotted right out.

No point in finishing the space if water is allowed to ruin it.

Tomorrow we will have all the drainage in place and the DMX dimple board completed.

We may even have time to pour the concrete if we are lucky! I'll keep you posted.

Quick upgrade for this home.

The existing sump pump failed causing a flood in the Nova Scotia home.

With our Mechanical Flood Protection system the space will stay dry.

The original sump basin had very few perforations, and the gravel around it was too small for this sump-pump system.

We replaced it with a properly prepared basin using half-inch holes drilled every three inches vertically and horizontally. The completed setup contains two pumps along with its monitoring and charging equipment.

The details around a sump basin matter. The basin, openings, surrounding material and pump equipment all need to work together as one system.

A basement renovation can hide the areas where water has been entering. That is why the water problem should be addressed while the walls and floor are still accessible.

At this Bridgewater property, the plan is to open the floor along the front wall where the flooding evidence appears, install drainage below the floor, and direct that water toward an accessible sump basin with primary and battery-backup protection.

The goal is to put the flood-protection work in place before the homeowner invests in the finished basement.

This basement was open for renovation when rain gave us a rare chance to see the drainage area working before the new finishes covered it.

The trench is about 12 inches deep and contains inch-and-a-quarter washed gravel and a four-inch perforated PVC pipe. The pipe runs roughly 40 feet to the new sump location so groundwater can be collected where it enters most heavily and pumped away.

Because the floor and walls were still open, we could see the groundwater entering and confirm that the drainage pipe was controlling the water level during the filmed conditions. This is much harder to see once a finished basement is back together.

A preassembled sump pump system involves hands-on work before it leaves the shop.

This short behind-the-scenes look follows part of the test setup: the assembled pumps are placed in the basin, the piping and connections are checked, the controller is connected, and the water test begins.
The process is practical and physical. Small adjustments happen at the basin, at the piping and at the controls before the system is prepared for shipment.

Homeowners usually see the finished system. This is a quick look at some of the workshop work that happens before that point.
