CARPENTER ANT DAMAGE

🐜 This shows carpenter ants chewing into and making a nest in some plywood in a shed.
You can see the destruction they cause. We found many more ants and eggs because we opened the nest before remembering to take photos. We had to spray the wood, the shed it was in and the nearby house for prevention.

CARPENTER ANTS

🪵 Carpenter ants build nests in damp wood by chewing out areas with their mandibles. They do not consume the wood like termites do and you generally find sawdust piles beside where they have made the nest. The main carpenter ants in Canada are the black carpenter ants and they are completely brownish-black. They live in colonies that comprise of hundreds or thousands of ants and can have more than one queen. All worker ants are sterile females, but the colonies have many males and females that do reproduce. At the age of reproduction both males and females have wings. When carpenter ants invade a structure they sometimes set up a smaller satellite colony which is how they can become a big problem if they are around or near your home.

Signs you may have carpenter ants are:

🐜 You’ve noticed small sawdust piles in or around your home

🐜 You can see the carpenter ants usually in a damp location like under the kitchen sink

🐜 You’ve seen winged ants trying to escape your house usually in the spring time

🐜 Ants are more active at night and you may be able to hear a dry rustling noise if the house is quiet enough

ON SITE WEDNESDAY

🪺 The client called us because they had birds in their vent that a starling had pecked through the louvers. We convinced the homeowners to keep the babies in the vent until they were ready to fly away. Even thought stralngs are an invasive species they are here and deserve to live as well. The customer was kind enough to put up with the sound during the day because it wasn't really bothersome. The birds did not have mites. Once the birds leave we will return to clean out the vent and spray for any bugs. Then we will replace the vent with wire mesh.

🦝 This raccoon's mother was trapped and taken away. It is so important that people leave wildlife in their homes to trained wildlife professionals. That way the mother and babies won't be separated.

FAMILY SQUIRREL JOB

🐿️ I visited my aunt and uncle's home. They informed me that a squirrel had gotten inside their roof. When I checked there were no shingles on the return.

I installed a one way door and then shingled it. I also had to use some sheet metal because the area was completely chewed.

🐦 LEAVING FOOD OUT FOR BIRDS

Birds don't always rely on bird feeders in the summer due to abundant natural food.
If you leave food out it is okay so long as strict hygiene is maintained. Heat and humidity can cause food to spoil quickly. It is recommended to offer small quantities and clean feeders often. Also skip suet to prevent dangerous melting.

Best Summer Foods Are:
High-Quality Seeds: Offer sunflower seeds, nyjer (thistle) seeds, or safflower seeds.
Nectar: Keep hummingbird and oriole feeders filled with a 1-to-4 ratio of white sugar to water.
Dried Insects: Mealworms provide essential, high-protein nutrition for parent birds feeding their chicks.
Fresh Fruit: Offer sliced oranges or overripe apples.

*Be aware that if you leave bird feed out it can attract rats and mice.
