Mental Health

Mental functions necessary for everyday life include:

Memory (short-term or long-term)

Problem-solving, goal setting, judgment

Adaptive functioning (handling change, coping with stress)

Attention and concentration

Perception of reality

Social functioning (appropriate interaction)

The impairment must be:

Severe

Prolonged (12 months or more)

Present all or substantially all of the time (at least 90%)

🚩 Examples That May Qualify (depending on severity)

Severe depression with major functional limitations

Bipolar disorder with ongoing marked impairment

Schizophrenia

Severe anxiety disorders with disabling impact

Autism spectrum disorder with significant functional restriction

Severe PTSD

Mobility Impairments

✅ When Does a Mobility Impairment Qualify?

You may qualify if:

You are markedly restricted in walking, meaning:

You are unable to walk,
OR

It takes you an inordinate amount of time to walk,

Even with therapy, medication, mobility aids (cane, walker, wheelchair), or prosthetics.

The impairment must be:

Severe

Prolonged (lasting 12 months or more)

Present all or substantially all of the time (at least 90%)

🚩 Examples That May Qualify

Cannot walk 100 meters without stopping due to pain or fatigue

Severe arthritis gout knee problem hip problem causing extreme difficulty walking

Neurological conditions affecting balance and coordination

Amputation requiring mobility aids

Advanced multiple sclerosis or muscular dystrophy

👉 The diagnosis itself is not what qualifies — it’s how much the condition limits walking in daily life.

Hearing Impairments

You may qualify if:

You are unable to hear so as to understand spoken conversation in a quiet setting

This is true even with hearing aids or other assistive devices

The impairment is:

Severe

Prolonged (12 months or more)

Present all or substantially all of the time (at least 90%)

👉 It’s not based only on diagnosis (e.g., deafness, profound hearing loss). What matters is how much it affects your ability to understand spoken communication in everyday situations.

The visual field is 20 degrees or less in both eyes
