Most people who ask us about water filtration aren't worried about safety. Edmonton's water is fine to drink. They just don't like what it does.

Scale on the kettle. Film on the shower glass that's back two days after you clean it. Soap that won't rinse properly off your hands. That chlorine smell when you fill a glass on a hot day.

Hard water is rough on equipment too. It builds up inside a water heater and a dishwasher, and neither one tends to last as long in a hard water house.

A system like HALO goes in where the water enters the house, so it treats everything. Showers, laundry, the dishwasher, all of it. A filter jug only ever handles the one glass you poured.

Before we'd put one in we'd test your water, because there's no sense installing a system for a problem you don't have.

Your furnace has been sitting off for five months. The first time you run it shouldn't be the night you actually need it.

Worth doing now, while you've still got room to move:

🔥 Run the furnace for twenty minutes. Listen for anything new and check that the flame burns blue and steady.

🌬️ Change the filter. A clogged one makes the furnace work harder from the very first day it runs.

🚿 Shut off and drain your outdoor taps before the first freeze. Water left sitting in that line is what splits the pipe.

🔧 Turn the shut-off valves under your sinks and behind the toilet. They seize up from never being touched, and you want to find that out now instead of during a leak.

♨️ Check how old your water heater is. Past ten to twelve years it's worth knowing where you stand before the house fills up with guests.

Twenty minutes in September beats a bad morning at minus 30.

Choosing one was much harder than we thought!

When we put the call out in August, we expected a handful of nominations. Instead, we got stories about people quietly holding a lot together, written by the people who love them. We read them more than once. We went back and forth. We'd have done every single one if we could.

In the end we landed on Brenda. Her daughter Ashley wrote in about her, and what stayed with us wasn't what Brenda's going through. It was that she's still finding ways to look after people around her while she's going through it.

Over the next couple of weeks, we'll work through permits and get her furnace installed, so she heads into this winter with heat she doesn't have to think about.

To everyone who sent a name in, thank you. That was the best part of August around here.

We'll run this again next year, and if things keep growing, hopefully more than once.

September is usually still decent patio weather in Edmonton (hopefully this year too 🤞), and it's a better time to get a gas line run out back than April is, when everybody phones at once.

A permanent line to the barbecue gets you out of swapping tanks and guessing how much is left in the one you've got, and that same line will feed a fire table or a patio heater, which is what keeps people sitting outside into October.

The thing worth sorting before anything gets dug is sizing, because the line has to carry everything that ends up on it. A barbecue on its own is a different pipe than a barbecue plus a heater plus whatever gets added in a couple of years, so it's worth deciding the whole thing now rather than opening the yard up twice.

He's telling the truth this time, it's coming from the drain.

A kitchen sink that smells is almost always grease, which goes down warm and liquid, cools off on the way through, and sets up as a coating on the inside of the pipe that everything afterward sticks to.

The other one is the trap under the sink, which holds a bit of water on purpose, because that water is the only thing standing between your kitchen and the sewer gas in the line. In a sink that hardly gets used, it evaporates and the smell has a clear path up.

If it comes back a few days after you've cleaned everything you can reach, the buildup is further down the line than anything you pour is going to touch.

Furnace prices vary much more than people expect, and most of that difference comes down to a few key factors: the furnace's size, single-stage versus two-stage, and how much ductwork needs to be replaced.

A quote that looks high on paper sometimes includes work a cheaper quote skipped, like proper venting or a permit. A quote that looks low sometimes omits that.

That's a 4-ton Moovair heat pump Rob installed earlier this year. It's running right now, at full output, and that's the actual sound it makes.

Nobody visits their water heater. It sits in the corner of the basement asking for nothing, right up until the morning somebody gets a cold shower.

Rumbling or popping usually means sediment has settled on the bottom of the tank, so the burner is heating through a layer of mineral buildup before it ever reaches the water. Rusty water from the hot tap points to the tank corroding from the inside, and that isn't something you patch. Water pooling at the base is usually the tank itself, not a fitting.

Temperature that swings partway through a shower, and a unit past ten years old, are both worth a look before the holidays load it up.

Thinking about a garage heater for this winter?

A typical install is a gas-fired unit heater hung off the ceiling, with a gas line run out to the garage, venting through the wall or roof, and a circuit for the fan.

The other half of it is insulation, which does about as much of the work as the heater does. An uninsulated garage will run the unit constantly and still feel cold down at the floor, so if that hasn't been dealt with it's worth looking at first. We can help with this too!
