🚨 THINK YOU’VE SPOTTED A WASP NEST? LOOK CLOSER! 🐝

One of the biggest clues is where the nest is located and what it looks like — and in Alberta, yellow jacket nests can be surprisingly hard to find. 👀

🟤 Hornet nests
• Large, grey and football-shaped
• Made from a paper-like material
• Often hanging from trees, shrubs, eaves or buildings
• Usually have one visible entrance near the bottom

🟡 Yellow jacket nests
• Often hidden underground
• Can be inside wall voids, attics or dense bushes
• May have multiple entrance points
• Frequently stay out of sight until wasp activity increases

⚠️ That hidden location is why homeowners are often surprised to find wasps coming from under a deck, inside a wall, around landscaping timbers, or from a small hole in the ground.

If you’re seeing lots of yellow jackets but can’t find the nest, don’t assume there isn’t one. 🐝🏠

📞 Major Pest Control can help locate and safely deal with hidden wasp nests before they become a bigger problem.

🐝 Hornet or Yellow Jacket? Know the Difference!

Seeing a buzzing insect around your home or yard? Here’s a quick way to tell them apart.

Hornets are generally larger, often around 1–1.5 inches long, with a thicker, sturdier body. Their colouring can include reddish-brown, yellow, and black, with markings that tend to look less sharply defined.

Yellow jackets are smaller, usually under 1 inch, with a slimmer body and bright, crisp black-and-yellow bands.

👉 Quick tip: Bigger and more robust? It may be a hornet. Slim with sharp yellow-and-black stripes? Likely a yellow jacket.

If you spot a nest near your home, give it space. Disturbing a nest can provoke defensive behaviour.

🐝 Wasp season is here — and that means nests may be closer than you think.

Seeing more wasps around your deck, roofline, garage, or backyard lately? There could be a nest nearby.

Wasps can become defensive when their nest is disturbed, especially during late summer when colonies are active.

⚠️ Before spraying, swatting, or getting too close, take a moment to check where they’re coming from.

Common nesting spots include:
• Under decks and eaves
• Wall voids
• Attics and sheds
• Trees and shrubs
• Around fences and outdoor structures

If wasps are becoming a regular problem around your Alberta home, Major Pest Control can help locate and safely remove the nest.

Time to Call an Exterminator — Signs to Watch For 🐜🐀

Seeing one bug doesn't always mean it's an infestation. But some signs mean it's time to stop guessing and get it checked.

Here's when to call in a professional:

You're seeing pests repeatedly, not just once in a while
You notice droppings, nests, or gnaw marks around your home
There's an unexplained odour you can't pinpoint
DIY sprays and traps aren't working anymore
You spot damage to wood, wiring, or insulation

Not every pest sighting needs professional treatment. But these signs are worth taking seriously.

🐜 When Is It Time to Call a Pest Control Professional?

Not every pest sighting needs professional treatment.

Seeing one ant, spider, or fly doesn’t always mean there’s an infestation. But some signs are worth taking seriously:

• You keep seeing the same pest repeatedly
• You’re finding pests in multiple areas of the home
• You notice droppings, nests, damage, or other signs of activity
• DIY treatments only provide temporary results
• You’ve found a large nest or an active infestation
• You’re unsure what pest you’re dealing with

Sometimes the biggest clue is simple:

The problem keeps coming back.

Getting the pest properly identified can help determine whether professional treatment is actually needed.

⚠️ DON’T DISTURB A WASP NEST

That small nest under your deck, roof edge, shed, or eaves may look harmless.

But getting too close, poking it, spraying it, or trying to knock it down can provoke defensive wasps.

If you find a nest:

• Keep your distance
• Keep children and pets away
• Avoid disturbing the nest
• Have the nest assessed by a pest professional

A professional can identify the nest location and choose an appropriate removal approach.

🐝 5 Signs You May Have a Hidden Wasp Nest

One wasp is annoying. Several wasps coming from the same area are a warning sign.

A nest may be hidden under your deck, roof edge, siding, shed, or another hard-to-see spot.

Look for these 5 signs:

Wasps repeatedly flying to one spot
Heavy wasp activity around your roof or eaves
Wasps entering a crack or small opening
A steady increase in wasp activity around your yard
A visible nest tucked under an overhang or structure

⚠️ If you find a nest, avoid disturbing it. Spraying, poking, or knocking it down can provoke defensive wasps.

🚨 Seeing More Wasps Around Your Alberta Home?

If wasps seem to be showing up everywhere lately, there could be a nest nearby.

Check areas like:

• Under deck railings
• Eaves and roof edges
• Sheds and garages
• Wall voids and cracks
• Around trees, fences, and outdoor structures

The tricky part? A nest can be hidden from view while wasps continue flying in and out of the same area.

⚠️ Avoid poking, spraying, or disturbing a nest yourself. Agitated wasps can become defensive quickly.

🐝 Don't let wasps turn your backyard into their territory this summer!

That "harmless" nest under your eaves? It can grow to hundreds of wasps FAST — and once it's established, it's a lot harder (and riskier) to deal with.

Here are a few simple habits that make a big difference:

✅ Keep food & drinks covered when eating outside
✅ Seal garbage cans tightly + rinse recyclables
✅ Clean up fallen fruit and spills right away
✅ Seal cracks around windows, doors & siding
✅ Fix torn screens — wasps can squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm!
✅ Trim branches and shrubs away from your house
✅ Check eaves, sheds & attics each spring for early nest activity

👀 Spotted a nest already? Don't risk removing it yourself — some wasp species get aggressive fast when disturbed. Call the pros at Major Pest Control, and we'll take care of it safely.
