🔥 Here’s the before and after of a furnace job that started out as a routine service.
The furnace was only four years old, but the furnace before it had lasted just six years. I also noticed some makeshift strapping around the ductwork, which made me suspicious of an airflow problem.
I fired up the furnace, and the ductwork let out a loud bang when it went into second stage. I measured the supply and return-air temperatures and found the furnace was operating above the manufacturer’s allowable temperature-rise range—even though the blower was already set to high.
When the fan shut off, the ductwork banged again.
I brought the homeowner downstairs and explained what was happening and why the existing duct setup wasn’t providing enough airflow for the furnace. She said she had heard the banging for so long that it had become a kind of white noise.
I went through what I could do to correct it, increased the size of the return-air drop, installed a platform to make the airflow less restrictive and straightened everything else out.
Once the work was complete, I ran the furnace through a full commissioning sequence and confirmed it was operating within the manufacturer’s specifications.
She was thrilled with the result, and I was happy to see the relief on her face.
