In case we haven’t met yet, I’m Mel, Chief Sawdust Officer at Black Cat Woodcraft, and reluctant social media manager. I’ve heard it a million times that if you are a business owner in 2026 you gotta be yapping on the internet. I’ve been successfully avoiding it for a long time and I would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for you meddling kids! And by this terrible scooby-doo reference I mean Prince Edward Island graciously granting me the opportunity to make some awesome benches for their literary trail beginning this summer at Basin Head and Point Prim. It’s been a blast and I loved every minute of it even if y’all do have me out of the shop, talking to people 🙈

Tourism PEI, in collaboration with bestselling Canadian author Carley Fortune, unveiled a series of handcrafted benches at locations featured in This Summer Will Be Different, creating a new literary tourism experience that celebrates the Island's landscapes, communities and growing profile as a destination for readers from around the globe.

Tourism PEI, in collaboration with bestselling Canadian author Carley Fortune, unveiled a series of handcrafted benches at locations featured in This Summer Will Be Different.

The first bench installations can be found at Basin Head Provincial Park and Point Prim Lighthouse, two iconic settings where visitors can pause and experience some of the landscapes that helped bring This Summer Will Be Different to life.

More than places to sit, the installations serve as story markers, encouraging visitors to linger a little longer, soak in the view and experience the Island through the eyes of the novel's beloved characters.
