🏠 How It Works: Brick & Stone Veneer
Bonus 2 of Know Your Siding

Like stucco, brick and stone veneer are exterior finishes rather than true siding — but they're common enough across Calgary to round out this series properly. Most "brick" and "stone" homes here actually use veneer: a thin, lightweight layer installed over the wall structure, not full solid masonry.

How it compares to siding:

This is actually one of the best climate performers in the whole series. Veneer holds up extremely well through freeze-thaw and hail, and often comes with warranties up to 50 years. Unlike vinyl or stucco, there's no repaint or refinish cycle to worry about—it's genuinely low-maintenance once installed.

🏠 How It Works: Stucco Finish

Technically, stucco isn't siding — it's an exterior finish. Unlike panel siding such as Hardie, vinyl, cedar, or metal, stucco is applied as a single continuous surface over a mesh or lath system.
Why Calgary is tough on stucco: Stucco doesn't flex, so our freeze-thaw cycles and Chinook swings can cause hairline cracks over time. Once moisture gets into those cracks, the damage can get worse.
The good news? Properly maintained stucco can last for decades and offers a unique look, texture and good insulation.

Metal siding is gaining popularity in Calgary, particularly for modern renovations and infill homes. And with our hail-heavy climate, it has some real advantages.
So what actually is it?
Metal siding is made from steel or aluminum panels with a factory-applied weather-resistant coating. It can be installed in horizontal or vertical profiles and offers excellent durability, fire resistance, and low maintenance.
Why it works well in Calgary:
Metal is one of the more hail-resistant siding options available. Steel handles impact especially well, while aluminum can dent from larger hail — usually a cosmetic issue rather than a failure of the weather barrier.
It also won't rot, attract insects, or become brittle in Calgary's cold temperatures.
The honest downside:
Metal siding costs more upfront than vinyl. Aluminum can also show dents after a major hailstorm, and metal can be noisier during heavy rain or hail if it's not properly insulated.

Part 3 of Know Your Siding
Nothing looks quite like real cedar. Its natural grain and warmth make it one of the most beautiful siding options available. But Calgary's climate can be tough on wood, so it's important to know what you're getting into.
Cedar siding comes in bevel, shakes & shingles, or tongue-and-groove profiles. It's naturally resistant to insects and rodents and has been used on Calgary homes for generations.
The biggest challenge is our climate. Calgary's higher elevation means about 20% more UV exposure, while freeze-thaw cycles and our dry winters cause wood to weather faster than in many other parts of Canada. That's why cedar typically needs to be re-stained every 4–6 years here.
If you love the look but want less maintenance, HardiePlank with a Cedarmill finish offers a very similar appearance with much lower upkeep.

🏠 **How it works: Vinyl Siding**
*Part 2 of Know Your Siding*

Vinyl is the most common siding material in Calgary — and for good reason. It's affordable, low-maintenance, and comes in a huge range of colours and styles. But not all vinyl is built the same, and that matters a lot here.

**So what actually is it?**

Vinyl siding is a plastic (PVC) panel that snaps together in overlapping sections. It's water-resistant, doesn't rot, and never needs painting.

**Why Calgary is tougher on vinyl than most cities:**

Chinooks are the real challenge — a swing from -25°C to +5°C in a single day is normal here, and vinyl expands and contracts with every swing. Cheaper vinyl gets genuinely brittle below about -10°C, which is exactly when it's most likely to crack from a bump, a hailstone, or even a snow shovel.

That's why panel thickness matters more in Calgary than almost anywhere else. Standard builder-grade vinyl (0.040") is the type that struggles. Thicker, cold-rated panels (0.044"–0.046"+) hold up dramatically better through winter and hail season.

**The honest downside:**

Vinyl isn't as impact-resistant as fibre cement, and lower-grade panels can fade or crack faster in Calgary's intense UV and freeze-thaw cycles. If a hailstorm hits hard, standard vinyl is more likely to need repair than Hardie board.

**Why people still choose it:**

Cost. Vinyl is significantly cheaper upfront than fibre cement, installs faster, and — when you choose the right thickness for our climate — genuinely performs well for 20–30+ years. For a lot of Calgary homeowners, it's the practical, budget-smart choice.

**What we install:**

🔸 Standard vinyl (0.040"–0.042") — budget-friendly, best on lower-exposure walls
🔸 Cold-rated vinyl (0.044"–0.046"+) — our recommended minimum for Calgary
🔸 Insulated vinyl — foam-backed panels that also boost your wall's R-value and cut heating costs

🏠 How it works: Hardie Board (Fibre Cement Siding)
If you've been thinking about replacing your siding, you've probably heard the name James Hardie come up. There's a good reason for that — especially here in Calgary.
So what actually is it?
Hardie Board is a fibre cement siding made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibres pressed into panels. It looks like wood. It does not act like wood. No rotting, no warping, no insect damage — and it won't melt or ignite in a fire the way vinyl can.
Why it works so well in Calgary specifically:
Calgary's temperature swings are notorious — it can go from -30°C to +15°C in a single day. Most siding materials struggle with that. Hardie Board stays flexible down to -40°C and carries a Class 4 hail impact rating — the highest available. After the 2020 and 2024 hail seasons, that matters a lot to Calgary homeowners.
Maintenance is minimal too — Hardie needs repainting roughly every 15–20 years compared to wood's 3–5 year cycle.
The honest downside:
Hardie Board costs more upfront than vinyl — sometimes significantly. If budget is the main driver, that's a real consideration. But for most Calgary homeowners, the math works out over time: fewer repairs, no hail replacement cycles, lower maintenance costs, and a longer lifespan. You're paying more once instead of paying repeatedly.
