Welcome to the BER months.

September usually gives us a little breathing room before the real cold arrives, which makes now a good time to look around your home for the small things that can become much bigger problems once temperatures start to drop.

Clean gutters and downspouts help move water away from your home. Disconnecting outdoor hoses can help prevent freezing and damaged pipes. Checking your roof, drainage, windows and exterior vents now means fewer surprises when winter arrives.

This project didn’t start with an asbestos call. It started with a leak.

A balcony leak at a three-storey townhouse complex had made its way into a bedroom. Given the age of the building, testing was completed before any affected building materials were disturbed.

The results identified asbestos-containing materials in the ceiling and exterior wall, which meant the scope of work had to change before repairs could continue.

Containment was established to isolate the affected work area, allowing the asbestos abatement to be completed before moving into the next stage of restoration.

It’s a good example of how a seemingly straightforward water loss can uncover additional considerations once an assessment is underway.

The initial damage may be what brings us to a property. Understanding the full scope is what determines what happens next.

Here’s something you might not expect after a house fire.

“Smoke and soot can travel to areas of your home the fire never reached.”

Fact or myth?

A fire can be contained to one area of a home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the damage stops there.

Smoke and soot particles can move through open spaces and settle on walls, ceilings, furniture and other surfaces. Air movement can carry those particles even farther, and in some situations, HVAC systems can circulate them into areas that were never directly touched by the fire.
