When Calgary hits October frost, pests aren't just hibernating—they’re looking for a key to your home. A mouse only needs a 6mm gap (about the width of a pencil) to squeeze into your home. The best pest control happens outside before the heavy snow falls.
October Yard Cleanup Checklist ✏️
🍂 Clear Leaf Piles & Tall Grass: Damp leaf litter against your foundation forms an ideal habitat for mice, voles, and overwintering insects. Rake leaves away from the perimeter.
🪵 Elevate & Move Firewood: Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your home and raise it off the ground. Firewood stacked against walls is a primary rodent superhighway.
🪚 Trim Branches Away from the Roof: Cut tree limbs back at least $6\text{ feet}$ from your siding and roofline to cut off squirrel and mouse access to soffits and attics.
🏠 Seal Foundation Penetrations: Inspect parging, utility pipe openings, and window wells. Stuff gaps with steel wool or copper mesh.
🧹 Clean & Secure Outbuildings: Empty outdoor garbage cans, secure pet food in thick plastic or metal totes, and sweep garden sheds.
🔦 Check Garage Door Sweeps: If you can see light beneath your garage door, mice can walk straight in. Replace worn rubber seals with heavy-duty, rodent-resistant sweeps.
