PEMB in Plain English: What is a bay?

If you’ve ever looked at a pre-eng building drawing and wondered what a “bay” actually is, here’s the simple version:

A bay is the space between two main structural frames.

Think of the building as being divided into sections from one frame to the next. Each of those sections is a bay.

In a PEMB, bay spacing helps determine how the building is laid out, how the secondary structure spans between frames, and how the overall building comes together.

So when you hear someone say, “We’ve got three bays up.”, they’re talking about three sections of the building being framed.

Heading into Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the relationships that make this industry what it is. 🍂

We’re incredibly grateful for the partnerships we’ve had the opportunity to build, grow, and strengthen along the way.

Projects are never just about the building, schedules, and getting the job done. They’re about trust, communication, collaboration, and the people who continue to show up for one another from start to finish.

Project Completion | Buckhorn Yacht Harbour ⚓

Another one standing complete and ready to work.

Our Er****on team recently wrapped up the building er****on on a new storage facility for Buckhorn Yacht Harbour - Kawartha Propeller , working alongside Bel-Con Design-Builders.

Designed with an 80' x 200' footprint, this Behlen Building Systems pre-engineered metal building provides 16,000 sq. ft. of purposeful unobstructed storage space, with a 22' eave height and large endwall access openings designed to make moving equipment in and out of the facility significantly easier and safer for staff.

With an 80-foot clear span width and eight (8) 25-foot symmetrical bays over the full 200-foot length, this design created a substantial amount of usable, open storage space, while leaving plenty of expansion room in the future as the operation continues to experience growth.

A great project to see come together, and a positive collaboration with Bel-Con Design-Builders.

Proud of the CMB crew for getting this one raised and across the finish line with professionalism, speed and the quality to match.

Summer, you were good to us. ☀️

From early mornings on site to long days, big builds, team milestones, and a little fun along the way, we packed a lot into one season.

Today might be the first day of fall, but before we trade sunshine for cooler mornings, we’re looking back at a summer worth celebrating.

A pretty good sign for the start of a new build. 🌈

Our crew kicked off another project last week in Grimsby, and the site decided to give us a pretty unreal backdrop.

The first pieces are up, the structure is starting to take shape, and there’s a lot more progress still to come.

There’s something pretty satisfying about seeing a building at this stage. Just the beginning framework, a clear vision of what’s coming next, and in this case, a rainbow stretched right over top of it.

We’ll be sharing more as this one comes together.

Tight site. Tough angles. No room for sloppy driving. 👀

With barely enough space to manoeuvre our lifts around this building, every move has to count.

Tom put his skills to work, showing some serious precision behind the controls to get into those hard-to-reach connection points safely and efficiently. 💪

That’s what experience looks like.

Purlins, girts, eave struts. If you've ever read a PEMB drawing set and felt lost, here's the plain-language version. 🔩

Purlins are the horizontal members running across the roof. They support the roof panels and span between the main rafters or ‘Rigid Frames’.

Girts do the same job, just on the walls. Horizontal members that brace the columns laterally and provide a connection point to secure the wall panels in place.

Eave struts sit right where the roof meets the wall. They're the transition piece, carrying a bit of both roof and wall load and providing the location for fastening roof at the low eave and the wall sheets at their termination point.

Three parts, one system. Knowing what they're called makes every conversation with your erector go smoother. 💪
