On the heels of mother’s day it feels appropriate to share this photo.

My mother used to collect spoons - from places she’s been, special occasions or our achievements. Needless to say our house had spoon racks everywhere.

She had got the maple leaf spoon rack somewhere. It was made by a professional. But I made her the sides to make up the flag.

This was long before my current tool collection, in fact I still lived at home, probably in my early 20’s. A lot of trial and error to make the slots so the spoons sat right. No idea about species , grain direction or even sanding.

She passed away several years ago, so we don’t buy spoons anymore. There is no need to buy, or make, more spoon racks.

When I look at these racks now I always see dozens of things I should have done different. But I also see the memories these spoons and their racks hold.

I’m glad I got the chance to share my very early attempts at woodworking with her.
