John Bland Stonecraft Specializing in artistic stonework and design. My name is John Bland and I am a stone mason and dry stone waller.

I specialize in artistic stone work, and slate sculpture. In addition, I offer design and construction services on various types of projects including: dry stone walls, pillars, patios, walkways, retaining walls, various arches and much more.

I just think it’s a cool feature! Was a little tricky but really fun and satisfying to see it come together.

This year (2025) I don’t really have any work photos that I’m allowed to share online (privacy reasons) but I can share these two. When Im not walling for money Im slowly building a bunch of retaining walls in my back yard. Im a bit slow at this style of dry stone walling. I don’t get to do it very often. I wanted to do something really different from the norm for my area. Most people don’t realize there are many traditional styles of dry stone walls out there.

If you’re into Dry Stone Walling buy this book!

I’m not just saying that because my friend Nick Aitken wrote it or that my work gets featured in it a bunch of times.🥰

Nick Aitken is a master dry stone waller. He is super knowledgeable when it comes to dry stone construction he’s basically a walking, talking dry stone walling encyclopedia. His book covers many different walling styles, techniques and dos and don’ts.

It’s an easy read, it’s got great info and features tons of pictures from a lot of my favorite wallers🥰.

If you’re a pro waller, just getting started or maybe you just like traditional dry stone walling this book deserves a spot on your bookshelf.

Tony’s Church project.

My super fun project for the fall of 2023. Was so close to finishing but had to stop short due to weather and stone supply. Really looking forward to getting it finished in the spring. Also, excited to see how it looks when all the landscaping and planting is done. It sounds like it’s going to be amazing.

2018 some diagonal walling I did for Eric Landman. This is just a small retaining wall but it’s one of my favorites because I rarely get to do any walls where the orientation of the stone is anything other than horizontal. I especially enjoyed going the curved bit. Reminds me of a wicker basket.

If only North American engineers understood that diagonal and vertical are stronger structural bonds than horizontally laid stonework.

The end of a wall I built at my parents house using stone harvested from a wall my grandfather built long ago. Its my favorite stone to wall with. Its a local Fieldstone hard to find in large quantities but it’s around.
