We can use gardens as sponges to absorb storm water, slow excessive run-off, reduce erosion, and clean and filter water before it enters our waterways!

I had the pleasure of watching this monarch butterfly spreading its wings for the first time! I watched it over a few hours and finally it was gone. (In the video you can see the chrysalis on the underside of the leaf below).
It has a big journey to Mexico coming up but luckily it is surrounded by native plants in this particular garden so it has lots of time to fuel up!

While working in a garden today, I counted more than 15 monarch caterpillars on one patch of swamp milkweed! This is what it’s all about! 🐛

Don’t trap and relocate wildlife!

It may seem like a quick solution, but it’s ineffective and illegal to move wildlife more than 1 kilometre in Ontario.

Here’s why:
• moving wildlife can move diseases like rabies and distemper to new areas
• vacated spaces are quickly filled by other animals when the resources such as food, water and housing remain
• relocated wildlife are often moved to another animal’s territory, leading to conflict, injury or death
• mothers may be separated from their young, who may not survive on their own

Prevention by removing attractants is far more effective!
