When we think about working in the heat, we usually think about the physical warning signs—heavy sweating, cramping, dizziness, or feeling sick. But heat and dehydration can also affect how we think and perform.

A worker struggling with heat may have a harder time:
➡️Staying focused on the task
➡️Making good decisions
➡️Reacting quickly to changing conditions
➡️Communicating clearly with the crew
➡️Managing frustration, stress, or fatigue

On a construction site, those changes can create risk before someone looks like they're experiencing a heat-related illness.

Pay attention to changes in people, not just physical symptoms. If someone who is normally sharp and engaged suddenly seems confused, unusually irritable, distracted, or just “off,” don't ignore it.

Heat safety isn't only about preventing heat illness. It's also about protecting our ability to think clearly, make good decisions, and look out for one another.
