Tension Track Milled Joint - TTMJ TTMJ stands for Tension Track Milled Joint and is an EU-funded project under the framework of Horizon 2020.

The aim of the the TTMJ project is to develop, validate and commercialize a new joint system that will provide foundation specialists with the capability to deliver high quality, watertight and safe diaphragm wall joints at lower costs. The new system, invented and patented by the consortium partner CCMJ System Ltd., offers the possibility to construct profiled joints to increased depth, by mainta

ining the vertical alignment of the primary panel with a mill or Trimmer that is guided by tracks previously cast into the primary panel (after the secondary panel has been excavated and before it is concreted) ensuring the quality of the joints in the completed diaphragm wall.

Sign up to our newsletter! In the last number we talk about the Field Trials, started in Cesena from March 2019, with a 20m deep rectangular test shaft and a pouring test. We also take a look on our next activities and we are pleased to share our experince at , guest of Soilmec stand.

TTMJ FIELD TRIALS
The first phase of the field trials of the TTMJ System took place in Cesena, Italy in March 2019.
A 20m deep rectangular test shaft, normally used for testing hydromills, was used for the tests. To simulate forming a joint, the face of three concrete beams were trimmed to full depth by the TTMJ Trimmer. The beams had three different surface profiles and two different concrete strengths.
A pouring test, simulating placing concrete into an adjacent diaphragm wall panel, also took place in March 2019. An optic fibre monitoring system was used to assess the flow and quality of the concrete into the TTMJ track and around the headed bars.
A split test is planned to take place this May, to measure the strength of the tension connection across the joint.

The team has been busy during the days at , showing the project's program and the results obtained so far during the field test.
We had visits of professionals from various countries and specialized contractors, interested in how the TTMJ can be used to obtain high quality joints at high depth for the construction of .
Of particular interest is the capability of the TTMJ joints to act as continuous reinforcement in seismic areas.
A 2metre long sample of the pre-cast beam used for the Field Test was on display, to demonstrate the high quality finish level after trimming.

The TTMJ team continue the testing program to demonstrate the potential of the system. The special trimmer was used to plane the second pre-cast concrete beam, in two elements, 10 m long each. This concrete beam (UCS=50 MPa) was built with bulges projecting up to 400 cm from the face, simulating the bulges in the short face of an excavated panel.
In this case, the speed of advance of the TTMJ trimmer was maintained at approximately 50 cm per minute, and the bulges created no or little impact.

Members of the Consortium gathered in Rome University "La Sapienza" for the DFI-EFFC conference (June 5-8, 2018). The venue was the occasion to organize also a Consortium Meeting. John Coupland made a presentation about the progress of the TTMJ development to date to D. Nicholson, C. Barker, F. Petrella and M. Musarra who are the Arup personnel who will be involved in the field trials. The aim of the presentation was to provide all the attendees with a clear overview of the project status. The informal meeting was held in the Chiostro (cloister), just in front of the TTMJ booth.
During the three days, professionals of several nationalities stopped by the booth interested in the new method and the progress of the project. The status of the project was also presented in the session dedicated to Diaphragm Walls, and moved great interest in the audience.
