When designing foundation system for a building, there are several feasible options.
Where shallow foundation is preferred, one of the most common systems is individual pad footings beneath each column.
Foundation supporting multiple columns such as strip footings and raft are possible alternative for pad footings.
Where deep foundation is necessary, piles can be provided either underneath each column, or combined with raft and form piled raft system.
When designing foundation system for a building, differential settlements are highly concerned to avoid the damage of building components.

A pile may carry tension when it is provided as an anchorage against uplift force. Piles in a pile group subjected to horizontal force and moment may carry tensile load as well.

The tensile resistance of pile is solely contributed by its shaft resistance.

However, since a pile shaft resistance is usually measured under compression, the tensile resistance of pile is usually determined by applying a factor to that resistance.

Such factor can be calculated using an expression introduced by De Nicola & Randolph (1993).

When using typical design values of soil and pile parameters, the tensile resistance is about 70% to 85% of compressive shaft resistance.

Cone pe*******on test (CPT) test result can be adopted directly for displacement pile design, due to the similarity between CPT and its installation process.
Average cone resistance from CPT over the distance of 1.5 times the pile section diameter, above and below its base needs to be calculated.
Then, we may multiply it with a soil dependent constant introduced by Jardine et al (2005) and Lee & Salgado (1999).
The product of multiplication is the limiting end pressure for pile base.
The result from CPT is unreliable when it comes to determining the shaft resistance of pile.
