Repost from With a growing family, Trish and her husband, Scotty, were in need of a bit more space. Luckily, they didn’t have to look too far, enlisting Trish’s sister, architect Sara Tonini of to design a new home on a lot in Melbourne. Tonini and her firm partner, architect Rene Lieu, quickly got to work on creating a contemporary two-story residence with a saltbox roof that has enough personality for the entire family. Inside the striking home—which sports a conspicuous black facade—colors and textures combine in a rich tableau. Blacks and whites are set off with wood finishes, a terrazzo floor, exposed stretcher-bond brick, pink walls, and, in the kitchen, a grid of mottled-blue tile that matches the backyard pool. The architects’ proximity to the family was central to the home’s success, allowing them to plan out all the functions of the home in ways that the family would actually use them, so that no space would go wasted. “We just wanted to make sure it was efficient and realistically livable,” explains Lieu. “There’s a spot for everything.” Tonini agrees. “Working with Trish was incredible. She put her full trust in Rene and I—she fully appreciates everything we did.” And clearly, there’s a lot to be appreciated. Take a walk through the Calk House at the link in bio.
