The Illawarra Bromeliad Society Inc was founded in March 1992 and has become an incorporated body operating on a non-profit basis.

We are all volunteers pursuing our Bromeliad hobby from a wide range of backgrounds.

📍 Location: Berkeley Community Centre, 40 Winnima Way, Berkeley NSW 2506 (entry and parking at the rear of venue)

Speaker: Bronwyn Holm, founder of Earthfood will speak about how living functional soil biology can help restore stronger plants, better growing conditions and gardens that work with nature.

Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there! Here is a recap and a few highlight photos from yesterday’s monthly meeting. We had a fantastic turnout, with an impressive variety of plants entered in this month's competition. It was particularly inspiring to see such strong participation in the novice section keep up the brilliant work! Well done and thank you to everyone who entered.

Entry and parking are at the rear of the building.

Brom spotlight

Tillandsia streptophylla was first collected in the coastal state of Veracruz, Mexico, by French botanist Henri Guillaume Galeotti during one of his many collecting expeditions in the 1830s. However, it wasn’t until 1836 that it was formally identified in the horticultural journal L'Horticulteur Belge. It was given the name streptophylla by combining the Greek words streptos (twisted/contorted) and phyllon (leaf).
In its native range, it served as a decoration for religious ceremonies and festivals, where it would be gathered and displayed.
Interestingly, in the wild, streptophylla has a symbiotic relationship with ants. Due to its large, swollen base—which is largely hollow—the ants act as a form of protection and fertilizer, and in return, the streptophylla provides them with a home.

Brom Spotlight

Wittrockia cyathiformis, discovered in the late 1700s by Brazilian Botanist Frei José Mariano da Conceição Vellozo coining the name cyathiformis derived from latin meaning “cup shaped”.
Due to the massive catalog of species collected by Vellozo it wasn’t published until 18 years after his death and originally given the name Tillandsia Cyathormis and then believed to be a hohenbergia then later a Canistrum and finally was placed in the correct genus Wittrockia.

Growing relatively large, Wittrockia Cyanthiformis grows great in bright indirect light and looks fantastic as a clump and grows pretty well in our climate flower spikes last for months and plants flower around 3-6years so may take some time for that clump to form but certainly worth the wait.
