One of the two gravel pits we opened up before we got into harvest preparation. This hill was usually avoided for cropping as it was extremely rocky. The track alongside would become sludge with every rain leaving large ruts making it hard for vehicles and machinery to pass. We finally put the hill to good use, not only smoothing it out but using it to rebuild and straighten the track!

Check out the results from this season! On the left is our own farm, and on the right is a contract client.

The delver used in these paddocks was configured with three tines, as the soil was extremely sandy with clay buried at greater depth. This setup allows the machine to work deeper but results in wider gaps between each pass compared to a five-tine configuration.

Despite these wider gaps, the yield increase after just one season has been impressive. To further improve uniformity in future seasons, we can either cross-delve at an angle or switch to a five-tine setup to close the remaining gaps and achieve a more consistent soil profile.

You might have noticed we've been a little quiet on the posting front lately! We have been busy adjusting to family life with the early arrival of our son, Kobie Alexander Horne, born on May 5th, 2025, three weeks ahead of schedule.

We look forward to getting back into the swing of things and showing you some actions shots of our latest purchase in the upcoming weeks!

Malbrom Ag & Earths Delver

You won’t see another one quite like it.

Our delver was designed and built right here on the farm by me (Joel), after some tough seasons from 2018 to 2020. I’d seen big yield responses from delving done over 20 years ago—even in dry years—so it was a no-brainer that we needed to do more of it.

With money tight at the time, I decided to build one myself. It took a few years, a few versions, and a fair bit of trial and error—but in the end, it was worth it.

Built on farm, for the farm and now ready to benefit your farm.

Here’s a few photos from the build 👇

Happy Monday!

Lets talk about the benefits of delving.

Delving is a specialised machine designed to bring nutrient-rich clay subsoil to the surface, incorporating it into sandy topsoil, an issue for many local farmers on the Eyre Peninsula.

The benefits of this include enhanced water retention and an increase in nutrient availability. The risk of soil erosion is decreased and compaction is loosened, allowing deep rooting and overall an increase in soil and crop yields and productivity.

The photo on the right-hand side was taken in 2022, a higher rainfall year for our area. We stopped delving just before the edge of the paddock and the results speak for themselves on how incredible delving can be with the right conditions for crop productivity!

Have you spotted our article in the latest issue of the Eyre Magazine?

"I was reaping crops which mum and dad had contracted to be delved nearly 20 years ago and you could see the line where it had been done all that time ago, it had doubled our crop. I wondered why we hadn’t done more of it with all our sandy soil."

Follow the link below or flick to pages 12-13 to have a read about why and where it all began!

All the best for seeding and have a great weekend!
