But we JUST had new mulch put down… why are there w**ds already?! 😩🌱
We completely understand how frustrating it can be to spend money on a fresh, beautiful layer of mulch, only to see little w**ds popping up shortly afterwards! 😤
But here’s something important to understand about mulch 👇
🌱 MULCH IS A NATURAL, LIVING PRODUCT
Mulch is made from organic materials and depending on the type, can contain tiny pieces of plant material, seeds or organic matter. It also naturally breaks down over time.
💧 MULCH RETAINS MOISTURE
One of the main benefits of mulch is that it helps retain moisture in the soil. Unfortunately, that moisture can also create ideal conditions for w**ds to germinate when seeds are present.
☀️ MULCH CREATES A WARM, PROTECTED LAYER
Mulch helps regulate soil temperature and creates a sheltered environment. While this is fantastic for your plants and soil, it can also provide favourable conditions for w**d seeds to germinate.
🌬️ W**D SEEDS CAN ARRIVE AFTER THE MULCH IS INSTALLED
This is one of the biggest reasons! W**d seeds can blow in from neighbouring gardens, lawns and vacant areas, or be carried by birds, animals, wind and even people.
🌿 W**DS CAN ALREADY BE IN THE SOIL
Some w**d seeds can remain dormant in the soil for a long time. Disturbing the soil during gardening or mulching can bring these seeds closer to the surface where they receive the moisture and light they need to grow.
🌧️ RAIN CAN TRIGGER A FLUSH OF W**DS
After fresh mulch is installed, a good period of rain can create the perfect conditions for dormant w**d seeds to germinate — meaning you may suddenly see lots of tiny w**ds appearing!
👉 So unfortunately, mulch isn't a magic w**d-proof barrier.
We sometimes have clients who are understandably disappointed when w**ds start appearing after a fresh mulch installation. But the reality is that unless you completely concrete an area, nature is always going to find a way!
Even paved areas aren't completely immune — w**ds can grow through cracks, joints, and accumulated dirt.
The best way to keep a mulched garden looking its best is **regular maintenance**. 🧤
✔️ Regularly remove emerging w**ds
✔️ Turn or cultivate the soil where appropriate
✔️ Keep garden beds maintained
✔️ Use w**d treatments when appropriate
✔️ Stay on top of small w**ds before they become established
