The most important part of a bathroom renovation is often the part you never see 💧

Behind every quality bathroom renovation is:

▪️ correct substrate preparation
▪️ compliance with current standards
▪️ and long-term protection for your home

So, what is substrate preparation?

Substrate prep is the process of making sure the surfaces underneath your tiles — such as the flooring and walls — are strong, level, secure, and ready for waterproofing and tiling. If this step is skipped or done incorrectly, it can lead to cracked tiles, water leaks, movement, mould, and costly damage later on.

Many older bathrooms were built before today’s waterproofing regulations existed, which is why we often uncover hidden issues such as moisture damage beneath tiles, failed shower corners, and deteriorated flooring during renovations.

At Meli Building Group, we believe quality renovations start well before the tiles go on. Proper preparation and compliant waterproofing are essential to ensuring a bathroom not only looks great, but performs properly for years to come.

While preparing for this ensuite renovation in Westmeadows, Jake explains some of the common issues we often uncover in older bathrooms — including:
▪️ Water leaking beneath shower floors
▪️ Outdated waterproofing methods
▪️ Hairline cracking in corners
▪️ Hidden mould and rot developing behind the scenes

Many older bathrooms were built before current waterproofing regulations existed, meaning silicone alone was often used in corners and junctions. Over time, small cracks can allow water to slowly seep through — and you may not notice until the damage becomes more serious.

Although this project is an ensuite renovation, we’ll also be inspecting and rectifying surrounding flooring issues to ensure the finished result is built properly and protected long-term.
