In today’s competitive tourism landscape, the biggest risk isn’t other destinations—it’s being easy to overlook.

Many tourism experiences are well-designed and professionally run, but when they feel interchangeable, visitors are more likely to skip them. The spaces that succeed are the ones that are intentional, memorable, and difficult to substitute.

Small, thoughtful changes to existing environments—whether tasting rooms, boutique accommodations, or visitor centres—can have a disproportionate impact on engagement, dwell time, and visitor satisfaction.

Our latest article explores how design, spatial strategy, and experience planning can help tourism spaces stand out. It also references our recent white paper on passive performance in tourism buildings, highlighting practical ways to improve both comfort and visitor experience.

Why Some Cellar Doors Will Thrive

The cellar door has traditionally been about structured tastings and premium offerings—but the next evolution asks something different: create spaces where visitors want to linger, explore, and return.

It’s a bold proposition. Investing in spaces where sales aren’t immediately guaranteed feels like a risk. Yet research in environmental psychology, tourism behaviour, and brand experience shows that these are the spaces that build loyalty, deepen engagement, and ultimately drive long-term success.

Our latest white paper, Some Cellar Doors Will Thrive, explores how wineries can turn first-time visits into lasting relationships by focusing on presence, dwell, and immersive experiences—rather than short-term transactions.

At S2, we believe the cellar doors that embrace this insight will be the ones shaping the future of wine tourism.

Passive Performance in Tourism and Community Buildings

Tourism and community facilities — from visitor centres and galleries to libraries and community hubs — face growing challenges from Australia’s hot and variable climate. High temperatures, fluctuating occupancy, and sensitive internal spaces make traditional approaches to mechanical cooling increasingly costly and inefficient.

At S2 Architects, we believe the solution lies in climate-responsive design. Our latest white paper, Passive Performance in Tourism and Community Buildings: Designing Climate-Responsive Infrastructure for Australian Conditions, explores strategies to:
- Reduce heat gain and stabilise internal temperatures
- Improve comfort for visitors and staff
- Lower energy demand and operational costs
- Enhance long-term resilience and performance

This resource is essential for councils, developers, architects, and facility managers seeking practical guidance for both new and existing buildings.

Regional tourism projects often bring together passionate stakeholders — community members, councils, funders, operators and visitors — all with valid but competing expectations. The challenge isn’t a lack of ideas. It’s navigating decisions when everyone wants something different.

In this new article, our Director, Amy Smedley, explores how place-led leadership can cut through complexity and create alignment without diluting meaning: When Everyone Wants Something Different: Leading with Place in Regional Tourism

In the piece, Amy unpacks:
- Why compromise can quietly erode meaning
- How anchoring decisions in place provides clarity and legitimacy
- The role of experience design as a leadership tool — not just creative decoration
- Why strong leadership often comes down to what you leave out
- What consistently makes regional projects more enduring, coherent and trusted

For regional leaders balancing community expectations, political pressure, funding criteria and long‑term stewardship, this approach offers a framework for clarity in complex environments.

Amy has also published a deeper white paper on our website, expanding on place-led leadership in regional visitor, cultural and civic projects. If these challenges resonate, the white paper offers a practical structure for decision-making that protects meaning, ambition and local identity.

We’d love to hear what tensions you’re navigating in regional leadership — and how “leading with place” shows up in your work.

There’s a reason why visual language speaks louder than words — a single image can evoke emotions and set expectations in a way pages of text rarely can. But when it comes to visitor destinations, the most powerful image isn’t in a brochure or online — it’s the one people step into.

The built environment holds immense power to shape how we feel. Before a tour begins, before a product is tasted or an exhibit explored, we’ve already formed an impression. Because places have personalities — some feel generous, some efficient, some defensive, some made with care.

Architecture isn’t just a backdrop. It speaks to us — to our senses and sense of self. So the question is: what story is your place telling? And is it the one you want people to carry with them?

In tourism especially, emotional connection drives return visits, advocacy, and deep engagement. Design that expresses generosity, authenticity, and a clear narrative creates stronger bonds and lasting memories.

In one project we recently reframed a well-known wine venue’s story — shifting from teaching about wine to inviting visitors on a sensory journey of exploration. The design didn’t add layers; it uncovered the brand’s true personality and let it shine.

If your organisation is investing in visitor spaces, don’t just ask what to add. Ask: What story do we want people to walk away with — and does this place express it?

There’s a reason visual language is so effective — a single image can do what pages of text often can't. It invites an emotional response, reveals character, and sets expectations.

Brand Is Not a Logo—It’s the Feeling You Leave Behind

A brand isn’t what you say about yourself—it’s what people remember about you. In tourism and public architecture, that memory lives not in a brochure or a sign, but in how a place makes you feel. The tone, values, and emotional truth of a brand aren’t just communicated—they’re embodied. And long after a visitor leaves, it’s the feeling that lingers. That’s the brand.

Architecture plays a quiet but profound role in shaping this emotional imprint. The materials, the light, the way a space welcomes you—or doesn’t—all speak volumes about what a place stands for. Is it warm and generous? Grounded and raw? Curious and open? These aren’t traits you read on a mission statement. You feel them in the way a handle fits your hand, the scent of timber in the sun, the way the space either rushes you through or invites you to stay.

Good design doesn’t just echo the brand; it is the brand. It reinforces values not through signage, but through experience. A visitor centre for a conservation park that uses recycled materials and passive design is doing more than ticking a sustainability box—it’s telling you, in every quiet, tactile moment, that this place lives its values. A cellar door that feels personal and unpolished might speak more honestly to the vineyard’s story than any high-end finish ever could.

The most memorable spaces don’t just showcase a brand—they live it. And in doing so, they create an emotional connection that lasts far beyond the visit. That’s why architecture matters. Not because it’s a canvas for logos, but because it holds the capacity to make people feel something real.

In the end, brand is not a graphic. It’s the residue of emotion, the atmosphere of meaning left behind in the wake of experience. When architecture carries that truth—subtly, powerfully—it turns a space into a story, and a story into something unforgettable.

Just slid into Kosciuszko this week — right before ski season kicks off! ❄️⛰️ Amy made a whirlwind visit to soak up the snow-capped beauty and talk all things visitor experience design.

We’re working on creating a space that takes people on a journey of discovery — where stories, landscape and culture come together in immersive and meaningful ways. Stay tuned… this one’s going to be something special.

Curiosity is the real currency of experience.
If your space gives everything away upfront, what reason do visitors have to stay?

In our latest piece, Amy explores why the best visitor experiences don’t just tell stories—they invite people to chase them.

🧠 Inspired by Made to Stick by Chip & Dan Heath, we look at how architecture can create that spark—the moment of “what’s around the corner?”

Our Story: Studio S2 Architects are not your average design team.

As young Architects we, the founding partners (now our husband and wife directors at Studio S2), looked at the traditional behaviour of the architecture and interior design industry and saw an alternative that was much better. Experts were needed. Specialists who understood and valued an industry, who experienced it for themselves because they had a passion for it. We saw the need for designers who could create a memorable experience of brand through architecture, and who focussed on helping grow the commercial viability of a business. We pictured design where the needs of a business would shape spaces in 3 dimensions.

A life shaped around self-discovery through travel.

As born and bred South Aussies we love our state but have lived and worked as Architects for an extended period in Queensland as well. We love to travel together to learn, grow and be part of the world and to show our young family the potential that they are yet to discover. We have visited the great and famous, the vast, the incredible, the tiny and the boutique, and discovered profound richness in the fabric of tourism. We’ve experienced travel that can make you rethink your world, feed your soul, and help you truly discover yourself – and we discovered a mutual love of travel and a passion for tourism that became the building block for our business.

Partnership: It’s where we differ that makes us strong.
