Most electrical problems don't start with a bang. They start with something small enough to talk yourself out of calling anyone about, until it isn't small anymore.

A flickering light, a switch that's warm to touch, a breaker that trips more often than it used to; on their own, each seems minor. Add a buzzing sound or a faint burning smell to the mix and it stops being something to shrug off.

When we're called out for one of these, we're rarely just looking at the one thing mentioned on the phone. Faults like this tend to have company, so we check the surrounding circuit while we're there rather than patching the obvious symptom and moving on.

There's a particular kind of glow that only comes from light doing exactly one job well, and these swing-arm sconces nestled into the shelving do just that.

Rather than sitting proud on the wall, the fittings are recessed into the joinery itself, with the brass arm folding out just far enough to angle the light where it's needed. It's a small placement decision that changes how the whole shelf reads once the room's in use.

We work closely with the builder and cabinetmaker on jobs like this, because the wiring has to land in exactly the right spot before the shelving goes in, not after. Get that measurement wrong and there's no adjusting it later.

Word of mouth still does the heaviest lifting in this trade, and this review is a lovely example of why. One happy customer became three separate jobs across three generations of the same family.

The team started with powerpoint repairs and a light fitting swap at one property. Warm floors on a cold morning start with something most people never see. Long before the tiles go down, a sensor cable is laid beneath the slab in a set pattern, run on its own dedicated circuit so it isn't sharing capacity with anything else in the home.

A sensor sits at a precise point between two of the heating cable runs, so the wall panel reads an accurate floor temperature rather than guessing. Everything gets tested for continuity and insulation resistance before the tiler even sets foot in the room, because once the floor's down, there's no easy fix.

The panel on the wall is the only part anyone sees. Everything that makes it work is buried, and getting it right the first time means nobody's pulling up tiles later.

Before a single cable gets run, the plan comes out on the bench and gets checked against the actual room.

Drawings are drawings until they meet a real kitchen. Powerpoints that look fine on paper sometimes need shifting once you're standing in front of the cabinetry, so this stage is where that gets sorted, not after the walls are closed up. Two sets of eyes on the same page catches things one set on its own might miss.

It's a quieter part of the job, but it's the part that saves everyone a headache later.

Fuse boxes did their job for decades, but a lot of what was standard back then just wasn't built for how much power a modern home actually pulls.

Ceramic fuses are the biggest giveaway. If yours still has them instead of switches, the board's likely original to the house, and probably older than anything else running through it. Add in any scorch marks, a faint burning smell, or the absence of safety switches altogether, and you've got a combination worth taking seriously rather than putting off.

It's rarely an emergency the day you notice it. It's a problem waiting for the wrong moment to become one.

There's nothing quite like lying in bed and realising the fan above you has developed a rattle right as you're trying to drift off.

That usually comes down to balance. Blades that aren't perfectly even, or a mount that wasn't quite level to begin with, are the usual culprits. Everything gets checked before power's ever switched on, the fan sits on a proper fan-rated ceiling box, the blades are balanced by hand, and it runs on its own dedicated switch rather than piggybacking off a circuit it shouldn't.

What you end up with is a fan you forget is even there. Just quiet air, moving the way it's meant to.

Not every room needs a statement light sometimes it just needs to be lit properly.

This laundry gets an LED strip tucked under the cabinetry, positioned so every bench and corner actually gets covered rather than relying on one central light to do all the work. It's the kind of detail that's easy to skip in a reno, but the difference shows up every time you're in there sorting washing or finding something at the bottom of the machine.

Small addition, but a genuinely useful one.

Ask ten people what makes a house feel finished, and you probably won't hear "the amp's hidden in the joinery." But it's exactly this kind of detail that changes how a space actually lives day to day.

No speakers on show anywhere in this build, no unit sitting on a shelf creating unnecessary clutter. Just sound filling every room evenly, because it was planned for before the walls were even closed up.

Sometimes the best electrical work is the kind you don't notice at all.
