Distinct Innovations was commissioned to design a large modern country home within the prestigious Twin Creeks golfing estate in Western Sydney. Designed for a family of seven, the home required expansive indoor and outdoor living areas that could comfortably support everyday family life, large social gatherings and relaxed resort-style entertaining.

A beautiful swimming pool and feature fire pit became the central focus of the design, with the main living spaces opening directly towards the pool and outdoor entertaining areas. The project also included a separate pool cabana, designed with flexibility in mind so it could also function as private guest accommodation when required.

Once again, I consider myself fortunate to have been selected to design such exceptional homes over the years. It still gives me great satisfaction to see the finished result and to hear from the owners how much they enjoy and love the home they live in. When I hear that, I know we have done our job properly.

I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do.

Blairgowrie House at Epping is one of those rare projects that feels especially significant.

All the homes and extensions we design are special, but sometimes a project comes along that is truly exceptional, and Blairgowrie House is one of them. Originally built more than 110 years ago, this remarkable home is officially heritage listed as a 1912 Federation Arts and Crafts residence. Set on a private, park-like one-acre parcel of land, it is a property of real character and historical importance.

My role was to design a detailed rear extension of more than 400m² in a style that closely reflected the original 1912 architecture, which was no small task. In many heritage projects, councils and owners often prefer the addition to be deliberately modern or contemporary in contrast to the original home. In this case, however, both the owners and council recognised how special the property was and wanted the new work to match the existing architecture as closely as possible.

Achieving that outcome took more than two years of careful design development and close collaboration with both the owners and Parramatta Council. Credit must go to Parramatta Council, who were highly engaged throughout the process and genuinely committed to achieving the best possible result. Thanks to that positive and collaborative approach, we secured DA approval within six months of lodgement, followed later by CC approval.

It was an honour and a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility and duty of care required for a home of this significance. We recently returned to the property for professional photography and I asked the owners whether they were happy with the outcome. Their response was: “It is perfect in every way possible. We would not change a thing, and we love it.”

Just had to share this!!

Our client from our Creewood III project in Concord just left us a 5-star review and it really made my day.

He mentioned that as a first-time owner-builder, he was bracing himself for a massive headache with the heritage requirements. Hearing that we made the whole thing feel “straightforward” for him is exactly why I still love doing this after 30 years.

It’s one thing to get a design approved, but it’s another thing entirely to make sure the client actually enjoys the journey. Cheers for the kind words!

Designing a home and thinking “later” for your garden? The best homes don’t just happen; they’re designed as a single, unified vision.
The secret to a high-quality custom home design is having your building designer and a landscape designer collaborating from day one. Whether we’re working on brand new home builds, extensions or renovations or a complex heritage extension, we make sure the architecture and the land speak the same language.
When it’s done professionally, your front yard, pool and alfresco areas flow effortlessly from the inside out. This creates a real sense of completeness, where the landscaping isn’t just an afterthought, but a deliberate part of the home’s footprint.
By working as a team, we can protect native flora, solve drainage before it starts, and frame your views perfectly. Swipe to see a few projects where this collaboration resulted in harmonious, well-thought-out homes that feel perfectly settled into their surroundings.

Off the back of our success at the 2025 National Design Awards in Queensland, where we were lucky enough to take out a win in the Heritage category, we were also quietly working through another application for a heritage-listed home in Concord.

There was definitely a bit of added pressure on this one not only following the national award win, but also because this marked the third home in the same street where we’ve been asked to design a substantial rear addition, reflecting the level of trust built with both owners and council over time.

So you can imagine the relief (and excitement) when, just last week, we finally received approval. A big moment and yes, a genuine sigh of relief all round.

This approval wouldn’t have been possible without a great team of consultants working tirelessly in the background. A big thank you to:

– Engineering Studio (stormwater engineering)
– Blues Brother Arborist (arboricultural advice and reporting)
– PMA Heritage (heritage planning and specialist input)

Heritage projects are never easy and rightly so. Councils are understandably careful when dealing with homes that are often 100–150 years old, and navigating those requirements takes a lot of care, patience, and thoughtful design.

A great way to kick off the year, and a reminder of why we love working in the heritage space.

RIVER RD VILLA - ALTERATION & ADDITIONS
This project stands as one of the most dramatic home transformations we’ve delivered. A full knockdown and rebuild would have been the obvious path, but because the property sits within a flood-affected zone along the Nepean River, that option became a complex and restrictive route. Instead, the alteration-and-addition pathway offered the most workable design solution.

Council controls limited us to expanding the footprint by just 35m², enough to meet the owners’ ground-floor needs, but it meant every remaining requirement had to be resolved through a thoughtfully designed first-floor addition. The challenge was to create a period-style façade that not only aligned with the owners’ vision but also satisfied council expectations and complemented the existing streetscape.

Six months of design development, refinement and addressing every council request finally led to a successful approval. From there, the owner, a landscaper by trade, stepped into the role of owner-builder and executed the project brilliantly. The craftsmanship, detailing and commitment to the vision are exceptional, and the end result truly speaks for itself.

Please check out the before and afters.
