Somewhere right now, a gardener is sitting on a tarp with a hammer, smashing up a bag of lump charcoal. 🔨

We keep running into the same story online. One bloke described five to eight hours of it before he gave up and ran the lot through his electric wood chipper. Forty-five minutes. He also learned, in order: don’t do it while you’re sweating, do it before you shower, and wear clothes you’re happy to throw out.

Another described it simply as a huge, backbreaking chore.

That’s the bit nobody puts in the how-to videos. Making your own char is genuinely satisfying and genuinely cheap. Sizing it is neither.

It’s also the easiest part to skip. Ours arrives already sized for a garden bed — and if you want it finer for pots, leave it in the bag and walk on it. Thirty seconds, no hammer, no chipper, no ruined shirt.

We’re not going to pretend making your own doesn’t work. It does. We just did the annoying part already. 🌱

What’s actually in the soak. 🪣

When a batch has cooled, it doesn’t go straight into a bag. It goes into the drum.

Raw char is an empty sponge. Dig it in dry and it spends its first month pulling nutrients out of your soil to fill those pores — that’s the sulky-plants stage nobody warns beginners about.

So we fill the pores first. Compost and worm tea, a fortnight, a stir when we walk past. No secret ingredient, no additives. Just time and biology doing the boring, unglamorous bit.

By the time it reaches you the pantry’s already stocked, and it can go in the bed the day it arrives.

Your Char, Your Way. 🌱

Thanks to everyone who has ordered, asked us questions, and sent through photos of their beds over the last fortnight. It is a side business run out of a backyard and it has been a good couple of weeks.

Nobody films this bit. 🌅

The burn is the exciting part — flames, smoke, sound on. But the batch isn't finished when the fire goes out. It sits overnight, sealed and cooling, and we don't touch it until morning.

Two reasons. Char that's still warm can reignite the second air gets to it — open it too early and you've made a pile of ash instead. And char cools better slowly; rushing it shatters the structure you spent the whole burn building.

So we wait. Then we lift the lid and find out what we've got.

Some mornings it's textbook. Some mornings there's a corner that didn't get hot enough and it goes back in the pile for next time.

That's what small-batch actually means: every one gets checked by hand, and not every one makes the cut. 🌱

Here's a question we get from people who already know their soil: "Why would I buy pre-charged char when I can just chuck it in the compost heap?" 🤔

Honest answer: you can, and it works.

Toss raw char into a compost pile as you build it and it charges over the life of the pile. Better still, it catches nutrients on their way through — the ones that would otherwise wash out the bottom in a wet week. Worm farm people do the same thing: a cup of damp char into the feed layer, and the worms handle the rest.

If you've got a working pile and a few months up your sleeve, that's the cheapest char you'll ever charge. We'd never tell you otherwise.

What we sell is the shortcut. Ours has already sat in compost and worm tea for a fortnight, so you can dig it in the weekend you get it — not the season after.

Two ways up the same hill. Pick the one that suits your patch. 🌱

FAQ Friday: "Is the carbon thing real, or just marketing?" 🌍

Fair question — and this one actually holds up. When wood rots or burns, its carbon heads back into the air. Char it instead and that carbon gets locked into a stable form that sits happily in your soil for centuries. The terra preta beds in the Amazon are still holding theirs after 500+ years.

We'll keep it honest though: we're talking garden-scale. A few litres of char in your veggie bed won't offset your car — and we're not in the carbon-credit business. It's simply a soil upgrade that quietly tucks carbon away while it holds water and feeds your microbes.

Good for the bed, tick for the planet. That'll do us. 🌱

Got a char question? Drop it below and we'll answer next Friday. 👇

This is the whole operation.

Timber offcuts that were headed for landfill, a sealed kiln in the backyard, and the char that comes out the other side. We crush it and charge it by hand before it goes anywhere near a bag.

5% off with BUC5OFF until 11:59pm Sunday 13 September.
