⚽ FUN FACT FRIDAY: Everything really is bigger in Texas!
The Socceroos’ World Cup journey may have come to a heartbreaking end against Egypt in Dallas, following a 1–1 draw and penalty shootout defeat. Still, the stadium where it happened is almost as dramatic as the match itself!
Dallas Stadium, normally known as AT&T Stadium, is the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and is affectionately nicknamed “Jerry World.”
Here are a few Texas-sized facts:
🏟️ The stadium covers approximately 3.1 million square feet, or around 288,000 square metres. That is roughly the equivalent of 40 soccer pitches under one roof.
👥 It normally seats around 80,000 spectators and can expand to accommodate more than 100,000 for major events.
📺 Its enormous centre-hung video board is around 49 metres wide, weighs more than 540 tonnes and hangs approximately 27 metres above the field. Watching the screen might require almost as much neck movement as watching the match!
🏗️ The stadium’s two giant steel arches span approximately 393 metres, helping support one of the world’s largest domed structures.
🌤️ Its retractable roof can transform the venue from an indoor arena into an open-air stadium, a fairly handy feature during a Texas summer.
🎨 It is also part stadium and part art gallery, with contemporary artwork displayed throughout the building.
Australia may not have received the result we wanted, but the Socceroos certainly played on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages. Literally.
Did anyone else spend half the match admiring the stadium? 🙋
