Fire Orders can be complex, confusing and often overwhelming, so we’re launching a new Q&A series to help break it all down and share our knowledge with you.

This week, we’re covering:

Last Friday, Hugh and Dominic had a fantastic afternoon attending the Strata Community Association (NSW) Golf Day at St Michael’s Golf Course. ⁠
⁠
A big thank you to Remedial for having us and to SCA for putting together such a great event. It was nice to swap site visits and spreadsheets for an afternoon out on the course, practising our “golf swings” is a very polite way of saying we spent most of the day looking for our balls in rough. ⁠
⁠
Events like these are always a great reminder of the strong relationships across the industry, they’re also a humbling reminder that we should keep our day jobs.⁠

Safe to say, we are better Project Managers than golfers!

Botany Remedial Project

Works are well underway on our Botany project, with staged remediation rolling out across the building as we continue to drive construction works forward while keeping resident disruption to a minimum.

Since the head contractor kicked things off in February, the construction phase has seen site establishment, scaffolding er****on, demolition of existing balcony finishes, structural repairs to planter boxes (including crack remediation) and key waterproofing prep works.

Currently, works are progressing across multiple stages, with waterproofing and hydraulic upgrades underway, alongside preparation work for the installation of new windows and doors. Screeding is occurring, marking an important step as the team rebuild these areas following the remediation works. This is a highly coordinated scope that the team is navigating with precision, our high attention to detail has paid dividends with every balcony requiring a tailored drainage solution.

We're proud to deliver another project alongside .construction, continuing a strong working relationship built on collaboration and quality outcomes.

Today we’re excited to introduce Vanessa, one of our Project Managers at Valen! 👏⁠

Vanessa is an Electronic Engineer with specialist experience in fire services and electronic security systems, supporting the delivery of complex remedial, compliance and upgrade projects. Her engineering background provides strong technical capability in coordinating multidisciplinary scopes across stakeholders, with a consistent focus on documentation, accuracy and statutory compliance.⁠

She approaches her work with a calm, thoughtful and detail-driven mindset, helping to bring clarity to complex technical challenges and ensuring all project elements are well aligned from design through to delivery.⁠

A couple of fun things about Vanessa:⁠
• She starts a new hobby every 3 months and has probably tried just about everything under the sun (her own words!)⁠
• She practices aerials (pole, trapeze and silks) and loves being upside down 🤸‍♀️⁠

Meet Daniel, one of our Project Managers and a valued member of the Valen team 👏⁠

Daniel is a proactive, detail-driven Project Manager with a post-graduate certification in Fire Safety Engineering. With a background in consultancy, he brings strong experience managing complex scopes across new developments, heritage assets and existing buildings.⁠
⁠
He takes a solution-focused approach to design and compliance challenges, working closely with project teams to deliver clear and practical outcomes.⁠
⁠
Daniel is also highly collaborative, sharing knowledge and insights that help strengthen how we work and support a culture of continuous improvement across the team.⁠

A couple of fun things about Daniel:⁠
• He’s (already) lived in three countries: England, Italy and now Australia⁠
• He played lacrosse for NSW at a national tournament 🥍 which we think is pretty cool!⁠

Welcome to Sutherland, where works are progressing on a combined fire order and remedial project on a residential complex.⁠
⁠
Valen is acting as Superintendent, with MAX Build engaged as Head Contractor for both the remedial and fire upgrade works.⁠
⁠
A key component of the fire order involved a complex glazing scope, where the original steel structure was found to be non-compliant. Working with JN Consulting Engineers, a compliant solution was designed and installed. The project also includes a complete sprinkler system installation in the carpark, which had been unusable for residents for an extended period.⁠
⁠

Ever wondered where the name Valen comes from?⁠
⁠
After many years of working with clients across complex projects, one thing kept coming up time and time again: finding ways to achieve cost savings without compromising the original design intent.⁠
⁠
In the construction industry, this process is commonly referred to as Value Management and Value Engineering. It involves carefully reviewing designs, construction methods and materials to identify smarter, more efficient solutions while still maintaining the integrity of the project.⁠
⁠
After hearing and using these terms for so many years, the name Valen naturally emerged as a combination of the words Val(ue) + En(gineering) = Valen.⁠
⁠
The name reflects what we aim to bring to every project we are involved in.

At Phillip Gardens, Valen Project Services is currently acting as Superintendent, administering the delivery of essential façade and structural remediation works, with Dapcor engaged as Head Contractor and Diagnostech providing remedial engineering design and oversight. ⁠
⁠
The works involve a comprehensive upgrade of the building envelope, including brickwork restoration, lintel replacement, installation of expansion and slip joints, and mortar repointing. These are supported by targeted structural reinforcement, concrete and painting repairs to restore both performance and presentation. ⁠
⁠
These upgrades are being undertaken to address a range of underlying issues typical of buildings of this era, including inadequate provision for structural movement, poor interface detailing between elements, limited durability and corrosion protection and ineffective weatherproofing. Left unresolved, these issues can lead to ongoing water ingress and accelerated deterioration. ⁠
⁠
Valen’s role as Superintendent is focused on maintaining strong contract governance, ensuring quality outcomes, and coordinating stakeholders throughout delivery, with a clear objective of improving long-term durability while protecting the value of the asset.

Another week, another introduction of one of our Senior Project Managers and a valued member of the Valen team: Matheus!

Matheus is an experienced Civil Engineer with specialised expertise in fire systems, hydraulics and construction delivery within complex regulatory environments. With both a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Master of Information Technology, he brings strong technical knowledge to the complex Class 2 remedial projects he manages from inception through to completion.

He also oversees the implementation of Fire Orders and works closely with multidisciplinary teams, with a strong focus on safety, quality and compliance.

Beyond project delivery, Matheus is always supportive of the team, helping junior members continue to develop their skills and grow their careers.

A couple of fun things about Matheus:

1. When he’s not managing projects, he’s likely scuba diving and exploring the ocean 🌊
2. He’s also a big cat lover 🐱

A project we’re incredibly proud of: Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul.⁠
⁠
The theatre carried a Fire Order dating back to 2007 that many believed would never be resolved. Engaged to take on this complex, heritage property, Valen led the project end to end: coordinating audits, design, tendering and installation works across a highly complex mixed-use asset.⁠
⁠
In under two years, we successfully resolved the long-standing order and achieved a Final Fire Safety Certificate, satisfying Council, alleviating insurance pressure and ensuring the safety of occupants moving forward, while delivering significant cost savings for our client.⁠
⁠
Fun fact: during the project works we offset our entire fee through a single cost saving by sourcing a more practical solution and contractor for passive fire protection works to the carpark steel beams.⁠
⁠
This is a common outcome when Valen manages a fire order. Through our network of consultants and contractors, we assess the effectiveness of proposed solutions and work with trusted industry experts to reduce unnecessary costs and minimise invasive works. More often than not, our fee is saved several times over by the end of the project.

Nothing strengthens partnerships quite like a little friendly competition 🎳

Last Friday, the Valen team swapped hard hats for bowling shoes and hit the lanes with our engineering partners at FMG Engineering for a Tenpin Bowling social – and what an afternoon it was!

There were strikes, spares, questionable techniques… and plenty of laughs. More importantly, it was a great chance to connect outside of project meetings and site walks, and celebrate the strong working relationship we’ve built together in the construction space.

At Valen, we believe great projects are delivered by great people – and that means investing in relationships, teamwork, and a workplace culture that’s genuinely fun to be part of.

Big thanks to FMG Engineering for being such fantastic sports on and off the lanes. Here’s to more collaboration, more milestones, and maybe a few more strikes next time!
