Installation day at Thirlmere — and the floor is going down. 🪵

After prep day — pouring self-levelling compound to bring the slab rooms up to tile height, and grinding the existing tiles ready for adhesion — everything was set. Today we're laying the engineered timber throughout the house and granny flat.

Glue-down installation across all the areas that were previously carpet. The existing tiles in the hallways, kitchen and dining stay in place — the new engineered planks tie the whole floor together seamlessly at the same level.

This is what all that prep work was for. When the subfloor is done properly, the installation goes smoothly. 💪

Prep day at Thirlmere — and there's a lot to do before the first plank goes down. 🪵

This is a full renovation of an existing house and granny flat. The owner had already pulled up all the carpet, leaving bare slab throughout the rooms. The hallways, kitchen and dining areas are existing tiles that are staying — so everything needs to level up to meet them.

Day 1 involved two key steps:

First — priming and pouring self-levelling compound in all the rooms that were previously carpet. The slab sits lower than the tile height, so we need to bring it up to match before we can lay the engineered timber across the whole area seamlessly.

Second — grinding and abrading the tile surfaces. The new engineered planks will be glued straight over the existing tiles, so the surface has to be properly prepared to get a solid bond. No shortcuts here.

Installation day at Kurrajong — and it's been a long road to get here. 🪵

After Day 3's levelling compound pour, we came back the following day to check the dried compound, grind any high spots, clean the entire surface and prime the area ready for gluing. That day wasn't filmed — just heads-down prep work. But it had to be right before we could start laying.

Today, we're finally putting timber back down. 250m² of engineered herringbone, glued down properly this time. Mike walks through what's happening at the start of the day, then you can see the progress by end of day.

This job is the reason subfloor prep matters. When the original installer skipped the steps, it all came back up. When you do it properly, it stays down. 💪

Day 2 at Kurrajong — and it's all prep. 🪚

Yesterday we uplifted all 250m² of the old engineered herringbone. Today it's about what was underneath it.

The self-levelling compound the original installer used had failed in a large portion of the area — hollow underfoot, crumbling out in sections. Every bit of it had to be chipped out completely. Then we got to work scraping back the old adhesive off the surfaces to get everything as clean and solid as possible before anything new goes down.

This is the unglamorous part of remediation — the part you don't see in a finished floor photo. But it's also the most important part. You can't just pour new compound over failing old compound. You can't lay planks over contaminated adhesive. You strip it back, you start fresh, and you do it right.

End of day 1 — Kurrajong NSW. 💪

All the herringbone flooring is up and out. You can see in some sections it lifted off incredibly cleanly — which tells you exactly where the adhesive failed to bond to the subfloor. That's the evidence right there.

Day 1 — Kurrajong NSW. Someone else's mess. Our job to fix it. 💪

A customer had 250m² of engineered herringbone glued down by another flooring company. The glue failed in patches throughout — some planks lifting easily by hand, others harder to get out. Self-levelling compound underneath is also breaking up in roughly half the area.

Sporadic bond failure like this usually comes down to inconsistent adhesive coverage, wrong product for the substrate, or subfloor prep that wasn't done properly. Either way, it all has to come up.

Day 1: cutting and lifting every plank for disposal. Mike walks through exactly what we're dealing with. Follow along — more updates coming as we work through this one.
