Clock View

Clock View provides a range of services for older people in North Liverpool including 85 in-patient beds for adults with acute mental illness and dementia. The project redevelops parts of the existing Walton Hospital site taking advantage of existing local transport links and an established healthcare location close to residents. In addition to its healthcare function, the project signals investment in the community and is intended to act as a catalyst to the general regeneration of the area.

Sunshine Coast University Hospital

MAAP worked alongside Deicke Richards Architects and Conrad Gargett Architects to develop a master plan for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) which encompasses a 450 overnight bed public tertiary level teaching hospital, with future expansion to 950 overnight beds. It provides a full range of ambulatory and acute services supported by a central energy plant, car park and an academic and research centre.

Patient care and place making is integral to the SCUH vision. The objective of the master plan was to promote good design, flexibility and accessibility using the underlying architectural structure and organisation of space to support versatile healing environments. MAAP led high level strategy and client/team liaison, masterplanning and concept stage clinical planning, the application of evidence based design and international perspectives on healthcare facilities, and user consultation ahead of PPP procurement.

Glenside Health Campus

MAAP developed the masterplan and architectural design for Glenside Health Campus in collaboration with local firm Swanbury Penglase Architects. This 129-bed health and substance abuse facility serves people from South Australian country regions and the eastern metropolitan Adelaide.

The concept adopts a village configuration whereby a group of separate buildings are arranged around a common central shared garden. A strong relationship has been achieved with adjoining retail and commercial precincts through the creation of a Village Green which connects the three precincts and preserves views through the site to significant trees.

Per Jay Weatherill, then-Premier of South Australia: "This is a significant milestone for mental health services in South Australia. The new Glenside Health Service is a key element of the state’s broader mental health reforms and places South Australia as a leader in this field. The transition from an outdated asylum style of care to a modern, flexible environment which provides mental health consumers and staff with a space to promote healing and recovery is transforming how we provide mental health care."

Thomas Embling Hospital SPICU

Informed by our masterplan for Thomas Embling Hospital, the SPICU was designed to meet the episodic needs of high risk mentally ill patients transferred from corrections with humane facilities for therapeutic engagement and healing.

Working in collaboration with DesignInc, MAAP was involved in developing the model of care and functional brief through an intensive user engagement process. The unit is located to engage with long views beyond the secure campus boundary and provides access to gardens.

SPICU was awarded the best mental health project at the European Healthcare Design Awards in 2020.
