Can you install smoke alarms yourself in Queensland?
In many existing homes, yes.
If suitable photoelectric alarms powered by a non-removable 10-year battery are appropriate for your home, they can be installed without an electrician.
There is one important distinction:
⚡ Replacing an existing 240V hardwired alarm?
Its replacement needs to remain hardwired, and the electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician.
🔋 Using suitable 10-year battery alarms?
These can be installed yourself where they are appropriate for the dwelling.
Not sure what applies to your home? We’ve put together a simple guide explaining the difference.

How many smoke alarms does your home actually need?
It depends on the layout of your home — not just the number of bedrooms.
In Queensland, the key things to consider are:
• Bedrooms
• Hallways and connecting areas
• Each storey of the home
If you’re not sure where to start, our 4-question EasyFit Home Kit Finder can help estimate the right number of alarm locations for your home.
It only takes about a minute.

Is your home ready for 2027?

From 1 January 2027, the updated Queensland smoke alarm requirements apply to all remaining domestic dwellings.

Here are 4 things worth checking now:

✓ Are your alarms compliant?
Required alarms need to be photoelectric, comply with AS 3786:2014 and not contain an ionisation sensor.

✓ Are they in the right locations?
Required locations include every bedroom, relevant connecting areas and each storey of the home.

✓ Are they interconnected?
Required alarms need to be interconnected so that when one activates, they all activate.

✓ Are they still within their service life and working?
Smoke alarms must be less than 10 years old and operate when tested.

How many smoke alarms does your home actually need?

There isn’t one standard number for every Queensland home.

It depends on things like how many bedrooms you have, how those bedrooms connect to the rest of the home, and the layout of each storey.

That’s why we created the EasyFit 4-question Home Kit Finder — a simple way to estimate how many alarms your home may need and point you towards the closest matching Home Kit.

Where should smoke alarms go in a Queensland home?

It’s not simply a matter of putting one alarm on each storey.

Placement depends on the layout of your home — including bedrooms, the areas connecting bedrooms with the rest of the home, and, on a storey without bedrooms, the most likely path of travel to an exit.

The example below shows the basic idea, but every home is different.

What does “interconnected” actually mean?

If one EasyFit alarm detects smoke, the other EasyFit alarms in the same interconnected group sound too.

That helps alert people elsewhere in the home — not just where the smoke is first detected.

EasyFit Home Kits arrive pre-paired, so the alarms are already connected and ready to install.
