Well, we’ll let you decide on that one..

Over the years we’ve spent a LOT of time sailing as a family, along with plenty of extended caravanning holidays — usually with kids, stuff everywhere, wet towels, nowhere near enough storage and someone inevitably needing their own little corner.

And weirdly, we think it’s taught us a huge amount about designing tiny houses.

When you live on a boat for any length of time, you start looking at space completely differently.

You stop thinking only about how much floor area you have and start looking up, under, over and around. Different levels become useful. Awkward corners become storage. A little nook becomes somewhere to retreat.

And you start noticing all the everyday things that can make a small space either really lovely to live in… or drive you completely mad.

Where do you chuck your shoes when you walk in?

Where does all the stuff go?

Can two people actually pass each other here?

Where can you sit with a coffee while someone else is cooking?

And perhaps most importantly when you’re travelling with kids… where can everyone escape from each other?!

Boats are actually pretty amazing teachers when it comes to tiny spaces. Every centimetre has to work hard, but somehow the good ones still manage to feel comfortable.

Somewhere along the way, all of that experience met Alison’s background in architecture, Ben’s in project management, and our shared love of doing things a little differently.

And Tiny Tect grew from there.

Looking at our tiny houses now, we can see those influences everywhere.

The different levels. Little nooks. Built-in furniture. Unexpected storage. Separate places to sit and retreat.

Finding ways to make a tiny footprint feel — and do — so much more than you’d expect.

We’ve never really wanted to take a normal house and just shrink it down.

We want our tiny houses to feel good to actually live in.

And apparently years of squeezing our family onto boats and into caravans has been pretty good training.

After years of building tiny homes, we've learned something interesting — it's often the smaller models that surprise people most.

We get it a lot: sites with tricky setbacks, tight side yards, that oddly-shaped corner of the block nobody knew what to do with. Time and again, it's been our smaller footprints — like the Studio OM — that fit where a full-size home simply can't.

When it comes to tiny houses, how small is too small? We're not sure where exactly the line is, but the Nido 5.5 m definitely doesn't cross it. Despite its compact dimensions, the home manages to provide a comfortable layout for two, all on one level.

Designed by Australia's Tiny Tect Tiny Houses , the model shown is finished in black metal and based on a double-axle trailer. Though its name references its length, for the metric-averse this shakes out at just 18 feet. While this isn't the smallest we've seen recently , the tiny house is still significantly smaller than even most European models and and less than half the length of many larger North American examples, such as Tru Form Tiny's Cascade Max . An optional deck area extends outdoor living space a little, too.

Given the limited floorspace, Tiny Tect Tiny Houses has sensibly kept the interior layout quite simple. Its double glass doors open up into its living room, which is pictured here with a sofa. You won't be hosting any dinner parties in this thing, but there's plenty of room to stretch your legs out.

Next to this is the kitchen. It contains a two-burner propane-powered stove and a sink, along with some cabinetry, a fridge/freezer, and a little space for some more appliances.

Adjacent to the kitchen lies the bathroom, which has a shower, sink, and a choice of a composting or a standard flush toilet.

Over on the opposite side of the tiny house from the bathroom is the Nido 5.5 m's bedroom. Accessed by a curtain, it has ample headroom to stand upright thanks to the home's single-floor layout – a rare luxury in a home that's so small. It contains a double bed and a storage unit.

The Nido 5.5 m model shown is currently under construction and is due to be completed in October. It's available for AUD 89,700 (around US$64,000), but for those who need something larger and more practical for full-time living, Tiny Tect Tiny Houses also offers an expanded version of the Nido, which has a length of 7 m (23 ft).
