2021 National Landscape Architecture Awards: Landscape Architecture Award for Community Contribution

We are so proud to share that the Mission Australia DAYS Courtyard won a Landscape Architecture Award for Community Contribution at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects 2021 National Landscape Architecture Awards.

The jury commended the DAYS Courtyard for the way the “project has transformed the neglected courtyard of a youth drug and alcohol withdrawal unit into a safe and healing space, demonstrating the impressive impact a small project can achieve and the leadership role landscape architects can play in delivering charitable work.”

Thank you to the Awards jury for recognising the success of the Mission Australia DAYS Courtyard and congratulations to all involved – an amazing collaborative community project.

18/10/2021

Our very own Peta-Maree Ashford will present at the upcoming Parks & Leisure Australia WA Facility Planning Definition Guide Workshop, sharing her knowledge, experience and advice on planning community facilities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Community Facility Planners, Leisure and Recreation Planners, Community Development and Place Makers etc.

When it comes to planning community facilities, there doesn't appear to be an industry accepted set of industry definitions in relation developing documentation and drawings. For example, how does a concept design differ from a schematic design? Is it the same for buildings and open space? What forms a master plan? These definitions are likely to differ between organisations, vary between business units and may even be debated between team members. This makes it difficult to effectively communicate what you are expecting when developing documentation and drawings for community facilities.

Using your experiences and examples from your workplace, the aim of this workshop is to gain an appreciation for the various definitions that are being used within our industry, to develop a set of industry standard definitions. Participants will be asked to bring in their own examples, which will be used during the workshop. The more you bring in the better!

We will hear from industry professionals including:

Peta-Maree Ashford, Director | Principal Landscape Architect - Emerge Associates
Paul Edwards, Director | Architect - Site Architecture Studio
Dave Lanfear, Director | Planner - Otium Planning Group
So come along, share your thoughts and help shape this practical and valuable industry resource.

Events - Planning Institute of Australia

We’re excited to continue our silver sponsorship of the Planning Institute of Australia WA’s state conference.

Emerge Associates' support of the Planning Institute of Australia WA’s conference reflects the extent to which we, as environmental consultants and landscape architects, work alongside the planning profession across many of our projects. This year's conference theme #Growing is significant for us all, imagining Western Australia with sustained population growth, a changing climate and a more diversified economy.

We look forward to seeing you at the stunning Mandoon Estate in Perth’s Swan Valley to talk planning and how Emerge Associates can support you.

Yesterday, September 7, was National #ThreatenedSpeciesDay, where we turn the spotlight on threatened native plants, animals and ecosystems and reflect on how we can protect them now and into the future. This year’s theme is ‘Ecosystem Engineers’ and the important role they play in Australia’s unique environments. An ecosystem engineer is any animal or plant species that modifies, maintains, improves or creates habitat and we’re lucky to have a diverse range of ecosystem engineers including threatened mammals that dig and turn over the soil, birds, plants, reptiles, fish and invertebrates.

Our talented team again took part in the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment Threatened Species Bake Off #TSBakeOff, donning their aprons to create some amazing specimens. Entries included lemon and coconut cake pops based on the WA endangered species Acacia aphylla, a delicious fairy floss covered albatross chick eating zombie mice, decadent chocolate cake with hidden eggs beautifully representing a malleefowl nest, gorgeous little echidnas and of course the very rare – some would say extinct – T-Rex!

We hope the Threatened Species Commissioner loves them as much as we do!

The final East Wanneroo District Structure Plan was released on August 18, setting a long-term vision for the development of more than 8,000 hectares of land in Perth’s northern suburbs.
The plan will guide the progressive urbanisation of East Wanneroo, delivering certainty to hundreds of landowners, ensuring the future community is well designed and serviced, with local amenities and community facilities such as district centres and regional playing fields, parkland and open space, future schools and transport connections.
The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage engaged Emerge to undertake an Environmental Assessment Study to assist in the preparation of the District Structure Plan. Through this work, we identified a range of previously unknown potential occurrences of the SCP20a threatened ecological community, which presented a significant land use planning challenge. In collaboration with DPLH, we developed a framework to address these values, such that the urban vision for East Wanneroo can be realised whilst also providing for regional conservation outcomes for the ecological community.
Well done team – a big milestone for planning in this area!

Groundwater monitoring is underway for a site in the Margaret River area set for possible future residential subdivision.
Our team were out tracking groundwater levels and will return to site once a month for the next few months to gauge the change in water levels with rainfall. Along the way, the monuments (metal water bore covers) had to be fixed, with the cows wreaking havoc and using them as scratching poles.
All in a day's work on a muddy, cow pat covered site - at least the sun was shining!

Our very own Hydrology Consultant Marley Butler has many side talents, one of which is astrophotography. His work ‘Between a Rock and Outer Space’ was recently announced as the overall winner of the 2021 David Malin Awards, Australia’s premier astrophotography competition.

The competition showcases amateur astrophotographers and their ability to capture the night sky. Of Marley’s work, David Malin said, “What makes it work is the overall colour balance, the evident but dominant rock foreground, and the softened, time-exposed sea.”

Described as a golden circular hue canvassing the night sky above a rocky stretch of beach in Western Australia, it truly is a stunning photo, and with over 261 entries from across the country Marley’s achievement is certainly one to be proud of. Congratulations Marley!

Media Statements - Kicking goals as construction begins on $32.5 million State Football Centre

Construction works have kicked off on WA’s new State Football Centre in Queens Park and we’re excited!
Emerge Associates have played a key role in progressing the football centre project from concept, through SDAU approval, and now to commencement of construction.
As an integrated facility, the State Football Centre will include training facilities and playing fields to support grassroots, community and high performance football programs, all sitting within a unique environmental setting.
We’re lucky to have had a wide range of our environmental capabilities involved including ecology, hydrology, environmental planning/approvals and contaminated land/acid sulfate soils, and can’t wait to see the end product when we watch the Women’s World Cup games in 2023.

An Emerge office upgrade was undertaken last week, with our Perth crew clearing the clutter and paving the way for fresh inspiration in a fresh space. Our entire team got to work, tidying up and cleaning out the Perth office and bringing our work space to life with new plants. It was a tremendous team effort which resulted in skip bin of excess material. More office revamps and upgrades are coming over the next month!

Our Perth and Southwest teams recently took some well deserved time out to enjoy the Emerge Associates’ annual mid-year social event. We headed to WA Museum Boola Bardip for a guided tour, followed by free time to wander the impressive building and amazing exhibits the museum has to offer. Games and refreshments followed at The Palace Arcade, with a fun evening of conversation and arcade shenanigans in the company of colleagues. A great event and we eagerly await the next one!

A smoking ceremony was performed last Friday on the site for the new State Football (Soccer) Centre in Queens Park. Read about the new State Football Centre: https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/state-football-centre A smoking ceremony is a traditional Noongar ritual involving smouldering leaves from the balga (grass tree), wattle and other significant native plants on a small fire. The smoke produced cleanses and purifies an area and ward off bad spirits. It also cleanses the spirit, body and soul of people when on Noongar Country. Noongar traditional owners use smoking ceremonies to welcome people to the country of a specific Aboriginal group. It recognises starting ‘afresh’ and acknowledging past, present and future Elders and community. A smoking ceremony is a significant ceremony and should only be performed with permission from the traditional owners. Given the specific nature of the ceremony, smoking ceremonies are usually only performed on special occasions or at major events and places of spiritual significance. Our Perth Construction team have been hard at work and achieved Practical Completion last Friday at Kingsford in Bullsbrook for Okeland Communities and designed by Emerge Associates. The drone footage captured by West Coast Drones showcases the barn style shelter with massive natural timber table and benches on the backdrop of a famous WA sunrise. The 7 tier amphitheater took two of our teams four weeks around the clock to earthwork and construct. The Donnybrook stone water play, with hand carved dishes to direct the water into a spiral tower, just tops off this articulately thought out public open space for the residence to enjoy. #TheLeadersInLandscaping #LDTotal
