Overseeding Ryegrass 🍀

Ryegrass is a cool season grass which I planted back in October. Unfortunately a few days after initially laying the seed we had 30ml of rain which washed away most of my seed. As a result you can see there is quite a few bare patches which I am working to fill in to get a fuller coverage.

The Overseeding process is filling in any bare patches with additional Ryegrass seed to thicken up the existing lawn.

The process for the best success was; perforating the surface, spreading half the new seed, top dress (adding a layer of sandy loam), spread second half of the seed then , used a heavy roller to flatten the surface which creates good seed to soil contact. Then finishing the process with a wetting agent and kelp (to retain moisture) and of course give it a good water. For the next 2 weeks I’ll give it a light water 3-4 times a day.

Some great results 4 weeks post renovation on this Santa Ana couch (and a patch of Kikuyu!) lawn. Even with the mild weather this has surprised me and bounced back quicker than expected. Couple this with a good foliar fertilisation program, this will be humming throughout Summer. If you’re interested in a lawn renovation there is still plenty of time left in the season.
