Merbau, and the tannin nobody warns you about.

Every merbau deck bleeds for the first few rains. Sealed and washed down before handover, so the paving around it stays the colour it started.

Underneath, there wasn't much set down off the slab to work with. The frame is H4 treated throughout, held off the ground wherever it could be, and sat on damp course where it couldn't, so air still moves under the deck.

Frame first.

LOSP treated pine, painted black to tie in with the rest of the timber on site. Hip and rafter, right on the boundary line with a new Colorbond fence along it.

Everything that matters about this carport was decided before a sheet went on.

Shiplap on a rake.

Spotted gum carried the length of the room to pull the eye out to the glazing. A shiplap joint is unforgiving on a rake, because the shadow line tells on you before the board does.

Spotted gum because it holds its colour outside. Most timbers grey inside two summers.

All the detail is in the finish, and the finish was all in the planning. Starts with the curve, then lining up every board of American oak so there’s not a seam out of place.

Framed, lined, then finished. Same corner, bare ply to a seat that blends straight into the room and earns its keep every service.

Clean lines, tight miters, grain running straight through the joint like it was never cut. That's the difference between a mitre and a glue up.

No two sheets come out the same shade.

That's the appeal of Cemintel Barestone. It goes up raw and stays raw, so the variation across the sheets is what turns it into a feature instead of just a ceiling.

Set out once and carried the whole way through the home and straight out to the external eave linings. Like the whole thing went in as one piece. No paint to hide behind, so every millimetre stays on show.

New brand, same hands.

Ran TBC Constructions for a few years, but it was time for a refresh. Started again under my own name.

Everything in this house meets at one curve. Hallway comes down into the kitchen, living sits opposite, and this is what you walk into.

This one's a beauty. Porta Cirque American Oak, run full height and wrapped around the corner into the kitchen. Tightest curve I've done in a premium finished timber.

It's the piece that makes the room. You walk in and you look at it before anything else.
