Celebrating the Success of the Inaugural SFEA Engineers Expo 2026! 👷‍♂️🏗️

GBC Weld Group is proud to have been part of the first Filipinos in Engineering and Construction + Technical Expo 2026, organised by the Society of Filipino Engineers in Australia (SFEA), held on Sunday, 11 October, in Dandenong, Victoria.

This event was more than just a technical exhibition. It was an opportunity to showcase the growing capabilities, expertise and contributions of Filipino professionals and Filipino-owned businesses within Australia’s engineering and construction industry.

From engineering and design to welding, fabrication, construction and specialised technical services, the Expo highlighted something we strongly believe in:

Filipino talent is not only contributing to Australia’s construction industry we are also building businesses, creating opportunities and becoming part of its future.

As an Australian-Filipino-owned welding and fabrication business, GBC Weld Group was proud to participate as a major sponsor and exhibitor, showcasing our capabilities in advanced welding technology, structural steel fabrication, process piping, quality assurance and skilled workforce solutions.

We were also honoured to have our Founder/Managing Director, Bill Cudera, share his experience through a technical presentation on “Business Model – Advanced Welding Technology in the Australian Construction Industry.”

Inspection is often the final line of defence before a component is accepted. 🔍

This is where a competent welding inspector becomes important.

Clause 7.2 | Qualifications of Inspectors highlights the importance of having people with the right qualifications and experience for welding inspection. 📋

An inspector needs more than good eyesight. They need to understand welding processes and materials. They need to recognise weld imperfections. They also need to understand inspection requirements and acceptance criteria. A small imperfection may be acceptable in one situation but unacceptable in another.

Good inspection is not about simply finding faults. It is about knowing what to look for and understanding why it matters because quality starts with the right people doing the right job. ✅

In welding and fabrication, waiting for everything to be perfect before improving can hold us back.

Every weld gives us an opportunity to learn something.

Maybe the fit up could have been better.
Maybe the welding parameters could be improved.
Maybe the inspection process could be more efficient.
Maybe there is a safer way to complete the job.

The important thing is to recognise it and improve it. 📈

Continuous improvement does not mean accepting poor quality. It means finding better ways to achieve the required quality every time. Small improvements in the workshop can lead to better welds, safer work and more efficient fabrication.

Do not wait for perfection.
Keep learning.
Keep improving.
Keep moving forward.

No shortcuts. No pretending he knew it all.

Matthew asked for a chance, then walked into a workshop full of noise, steel, sparks and people who’ve spent years learning this trade.

He picked up a drawing. Measured the steel. Put on the gear. Listened, asked questions and had a go.

That’s where it starts.

This trade will test you. You’ll get things wrong, learn why, and come back to do it better. What matters is whether you keep showing up.

Respect to Matthew for stepping in, and to Archie, Melvin and the crew for showing him the ropes.

AS 1210 | PRESSURE VESSEL WELDED JOINT TYPES

When working with pressure vessels, understanding the location and function of each welded joint is essential. 📌

Under AS 1210, Pressure Vessels, welded joints are classified according to their location and function within the pressure retaining structure.

🔹 TYPE A | LONGITUDINAL
These are longitudinal welded joints in main cylindrical shells, diameter transitions and applicable nozzle locations. This classification also includes certain welded joints within spherical shells, formed ends and flat ends.

🔹 TYPE B | CIRCUMFERENTIAL
These are circumferential welded joints within main cylindrical shells, diameter transitions and nozzles. They also include applicable joints connecting formed ends or transitions to main shells.

🔹 TYPE C | CORNER
These are peripheral welded joints located at a corner of a pressure retaining component. Examples include joints connecting flanges, tube plates or flat ends to shells, formed ends, diameter transitions or nozzles.

🔹 TYPE D | NOZZLE
These are welded joints connecting nozzles to main shells, spherical sections, diameter transitions or vessel ends.

Understanding these classifications under AS 1210 helps engineers, fabricators and inspectors correctly identify the location and function of welded joints within pressure vessels. ✅

A small opportunity today could help shape someone’s future tomorrow.

We’re proud to share the story of Matthew, a Year 10 student who personally reached out to GBC Weld Group and asked if he could complete his work experience with us.

This was our first time hosting a secondary-school student, and organising the program wasn’t easy. Most of our team works night shift, so it required careful planning, adjusted schedules and commitment from everyone involved.

Throughout the week, Matthew gained supervised exposure to workplace safety, fabrication drawings, measuring and marking, material preparation, fit-up, welding and quality inspection.

He didn’t arrive expected to know everything. We simply asked him to listen, follow instructions, ask questions and show a willingness to learn and that’s exactly what he did.

As a small company, we may not have the resources of a large organisation, but we believe we can still create meaningful opportunities for young people who are prepared to take the first step.

Thank you to the GBC crew for sharing your time, experience and knowledge. Most importantly, congratulations to Matthew for having the courage to reach out and successfully complete the program.

Sometimes, all a young person needs is someone willing to open the door.

Today, we celebrate more than just a birthday. We celebrate Mr. Bill Bryan Cudera, the Managing Director of GBC Weld Group Pty Ltd, and the person whose vision, determination and hard work have helped shape the journey of GBC.

Ever wondered how much tolerance is allowed when preparing a welded joint? 🔍

Joint fit up might look like a small part of fabrication, but it can make a big difference to weld quality. Root gap, root face, root radius and preparation angle all need to be within the permitted limits.

According to AS 1554.1 Clause 5.2.2 and Table 5.2.2, allowable tolerances include:

🔹 Root face: ±1.5 mm
🔹 Root gap without backing: ±1.5 mm
🔹 Root radius: +3 mm, −0 mm
🔹 Root gap with backing: +6 mm, −1.5 mm
🔹 Preparation angle: +10°, −5°

These tolerances allow for reasonable variations during joint preparation and fit up while maintaining the requirements for proper welding.

Remember, tolerance does not mean anything goes. If the joint falls outside the specified limits, it may need to be referred for inspection or approval before welding continues. ⚠️

Good welding starts before you strike the arc. Get the fit up right, follow the standard, and build quality into every joint. ✅
