Winter has arrived in Brisbane I love having a deciduous tropical birch (betula nigra) tree in the backyard. The fallen leaves not only look great, but they mulch my garden. And the bare branches allow the afternoon sun onto our verandah. Winning!

Funny story: Cris and I were heading home the other day, after our morning of gardening, when she spotted a hitchhiker in the back seat (I was driving). I must admit I was relieved to see it was a bearded dragon, not a snake, that had caught her eye. Fortunately we hadn’t gone very far, so our new friend could be returned to his home garden.

All my potted plants are safely inside and protected from the winds of Cyclone Alfred. The family are not exactly thrilled about the increase in spider webs, but I’m loving the look!!! 😀

Hot tip for caring for your indoor plants this Summer. Put all the plants in the shower or bath and water from up high until water runs through. This ensures a deep watering while also washing off dust and marks from their leaves. Allow the plants to drain before returning them back into their usual position.
I leave my indoor plants in the shower while I go on holidays as the bathroom is often one of the cooler rooms of the house. It also creates a humid microclimate, and having all your plants in the same place makes watering a quick easy job for a friend while you’re away, and you know that none will get missed.

And that’s a wrap! I really enjoyed our tour of the Western Downs. We drove 1300km. Spoke at 6 libraries and schools. Met so many great people. Talked all things composting, worms and native bees. Partook in amateur ‘birding’. And checked out local sights. Thanks Western Downs Regional Council. And many thanks Kylie Davidson.
