I went to Shannon Park Reserve today, to test the new playground for myself!

The new park – designed by JMD design with ideas from Bourke Street Public School students – gets a big tick from me.

The brilliant Paddington Reservoir Gardens opposite Paddington Town Hall on Oxford Street has been named one of Sydney’s ‘best hidden gems’.

The Paddington Reservoir opened in 1866. After it was decommissioned in 1899, it became a water board storage facility, and later a Caltex service centre, before it fell into disuse and collapsed in 1990.

When our Independent-majority council was elected in 2004, I was determined to rescue the site for public purposes.

Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects and JMD Design were commissioned to create the magic Paddington Reservoir Gardens which included the Walter Read Reserve and John Thompson Reserve.

When I waxed lyrical about the the new park being a combination of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Baths of Caracalla in Italy, people thought I was having them on – until they saw it for themselves.

Sydney’s newest playground is ready for climbing, swinging and sliding!

Shannon Reserve on Crown Street in Surry Hills is open again following a brilliant upgrade.

Local students helped us come up with creative new ideas for the playground. They told us they like lots of different experiences on the play equipment and the chance to engage with nature, animals, friends and family.

The playground now has fun new slides, bridges, little rock wombat seats and a water bottle refilling station. I particularly love the orange umbrellas, and look forward to seeing the new trees grow in.

Through the pandemic, as families found themselves locked down and spending more time at home, our playgrounds have been a real solace.

I know the period of time we had to keep our playgrounds closed was really tough for some of our youngest residents (and their carers!), so we’re excited to open this fabulous new space for them to enjoy.
