Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer (PSHB) – What Every Perth Property Owner Needs to Know

If you’re planning earthworks, landscaping, tree removal or a property clean-up anywhere within the Perth metropolitan area, it’s important to understand the Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer (PSHB) quarantine requirements.

The PSHB is a tiny invasive beetle that tunnels into trees and carries a fungus that can block the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients, causing severe decline and, in many cases, tree death. It has the potential to affect hundreds of tree species across Western Australia. (Western Australian Government)

Did you know?
The entire Perth metropolitan area is currently covered by a PSHB Quarantine Area, which is divided into Zone A and Zone B. These movement controls are designed to reduce the spread of the pest by regulating the transport of wood, green waste, mulch and certain plant materials. (Western Australian Government)

At Kaatalyst Earthworks, biosecurity isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of our project planning.

- We assess whether a property falls within the quarantine area.
- We follow current movement and disposal requirements.
- We help ensure vegetation and green waste are managed responsibly.
- We work with our clients to keep projects compliant while protecting Western Australia’s urban forest.

Whether we’re preparing a house pad, completing a site clean-up, or transforming your backyard, we’re committed to completing every project safely, professionally and in accordance with current biosecurity requirements.

If you’re unsure whether your property is affected or have questions about how the quarantine rules may impact your project, feel free to get in touch, we’re always happy to help.

Protecting your property today helps protect Western Australia’s trees for generations to come.

This project certainly put both our equipment and our skills to the test.

Our client is preparing for a brand-new exposed aggregate entertaining area and pool installation, so our task was to excavate the entire area to 100mm below the existing house pad level, leaving a perfectly prepared subgrade ready for the next contractor.

Some of the project highlights:
- Approximately 25m³ of grass and soil excavated and removed
- Over 2.4 tonnes of existing concrete and pavers removed and disposed of
- Entire site ready for aggregate installation
- Tight access excavation with only 20mm clearance on either side of our bucket when loading the truck through the side access

This wasn’t a straightforward dig-out. Working through such restricted access meant every bucket load required precision, patience and constant attention to avoid damaging the client’s home, fencing and landscaping. To throw another spanner in the works, we provided a solution for a soak well where the client’s new pool was planning to go. Removal of the soak- well and moving drainage to another location provided the necessary room for the soon to be placed pool
Challenges like these are exactly why experience matters.

We’re looking forward to seeing the finished exposed aggregate and pool installed—it will completely transform this backyard!

If you’re looking for a contractor who specialises in tight-access excavation, precision earthworks, site preparation, landscaping and complete backyard transformations, we’d love to help.

After -> Before
Sometimes the best value isn’t always the closest contractor.

We were up at 4:30am and on the road from Pinjarra to Dalyellup after a client reached out needing excess grass and soil removed from their verge following previous backyard works.

After receiving a local price that simply didn’t stack up, it actually worked out more cost-effective for us to travel down, complete the cleanup, and return to our laydown yard in Pinjarra.

Just because we’re based further away doesn’t mean we can’t provide exceptional value, reliable service, and a quality finish.

Thanks for trusting Kaatalyst Earthworks—we appreciate every opportunity to help.

Sometimes it’s about more than just moving dirt… it’s about helping people.

This week we had the opportunity to lend a hand to a local resident who had started relocating a much-loved tree to another location on the property. Unfortunately, due to unexpected health issues, they were no longer able to safely complete the job.

After discussing the best approach, we removed the overhead canopy from our 1.2-tonne XHD excavator to gain the extra clearance needed. This allowed us to carefully manoeuvre into position, excavate around the remaining root ball, and with a bit of manual effort on hand tools while the excavator was supporting the tree’s weight, successfully free the remaining root system ready for its new home.

The timing couldn’t have been much better either—we wrapped everything up just before the rain arrived!

A big thank you to the homeowner for trusting Kaatalyst Earthworks to step in and help. We genuinely appreciate the opportunity to assist members of our local community, especially when a project means something more than just another job.

Whether it’s tight access excavation, landscaping preparation, or helping complete a project when life throws unexpected challenges your way, we’re always happy to see how we can help.

I feel this year is a lot colder, the little guy is the first to cop the winter chill so we thought we would get home on the tools to sort the wood pipe after we dumped it!
We cleared our property of some fallen tree’s so might as well use it to keep us warm this winter!

Over the weekend, our team had the pleasure of completing this backyard and side access landscape renovation for a fantastic client in Byford.

As part of the estate package, the front and side council verge landscaping is being completed by the estate-appointed landscaper. Our role was to prepare these areas by removing excess sand and carrying out the final levelling works, ensuring everything was ready for the landscaper to work their magic.

To maximise efficiency, we removed the rear/side fence to create direct access into the backyard. From there, our team got to work:

Backyard:
Removed existing artificial grass from the area
Relocated sand from the front of the property to the backyard
Supplied and incorporated lawn dress mix
Compacted and levelled the backyard area
Installed new lawn to create a fresh outdoor space
Removed dying grass from the children’s play area
Re-levelled and prepared the area
Applied Moist Forest Floor mulch to create a clean, low-maintenance finish

Side access area:
Added sand to the side access area
Installed stepping stone pavers for easy access between the laundry, clothesline and backyard
Supplied and spread Moist Forest Floor mulch throughout the side access area
Reinstalled the rear/side fence upon completion

Front area and council verge
Cleaned and followed driveway/property angle of front yard area ready for the next stage of landscaping
Cleaned and levelled the council verge area ready for the next stage of landscaping

What makes this project even more rewarding is that it was completed over a single Saturday and Sunday by just two team members.

The transformation achieved in such a short period of time is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’d like to extend a huge thank you to the client for trusting Kaatalyst Earthworks with their project.

We understand that every property is different, and we take pride in working closely with our clients to deliver practical, tidy and professional results that enhance their outdoor spaces.
