Had the opportunity to demo for the WatercoloursofWAInc this morning, sharing my evolving understanding of edges and how I use them to create lost-and-found effects—particularly the less common use of dry brush to soften edges.

We also explored what pushing towards the loose and semi-abstract actually entails, and I shared a favourite recent art meme: “Paintings should live in that sweet spot between boring and confusing.”

Between painting layers we talked figures, how to achieve dynamic movement and proportions through regular practice. We also took a look at my super-light, sturdy and portable plein air setup.

Thanks to all the members for the fantastic turnout.

What a great weekend in beautiful Toodyay. First an afternoon watercolour of the - omg how camp are my characters becoming btw!!? - then an evening vista from the lookout above the town, chatting with the friendly locals as the sun set and smoke rose above the valley. Woke early to thick fog. Sketched the young ladies working behind the counter in the bustling bakery waiting for the humidity to drop a notch or three (I’ve learned the hard way not to even think of watercolouring in those conditions). Best coffee and pies (yes, real , actual steak in the steak pie) Town full of sunday morning motorcyclists mad enough to brave the mist so had to put them in my third painting, parked outside the hardware store. Finished with a magic drive home through the stunning Avon Valley 💋

Found the most remote, stunning little bay in Cape Le Grand National Park. It’s been overcast all day with very flat light. I set up to paint anyway and was fortunate to have a few fleeting minutes of sunset light drop in. The locals stopped/hopped over to give their opinions, too 🦘🦘
