it’s been a while, but i realised i never actually talked about one of my favourite, most meaningful pieces!

Inspired by “Comedian” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, my collection of mixed-media works tells the story of consumerism. You’ll remember the outrage of Cattelan’s banana taped to a wall that was sold for a ridiculous price in 2019. He was making a humorous statement of modern art curator culture: it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it has social value and status.
Using embroidery, I reimagined Van Gogh’s artwork “Sunflowers” with bananas to reference the fact that the value of his artwork wasn’t noticed until his death. I then mixed embroidery with acrylic paints to pay homage to a lesser known of his works.
The wooden board and ceramic rain-drop banana is a comedic take on surrealism- reversing the original painting of “Comedian” with the raindrop background being the banana and the banana texture being the background.
The ceramic banana placed in the centre ties the four works together.

Overall, this piece is commentary on how current society places unnecessary value and status on meaningless objects.
