"I don't want to feed the world, I want to teach the world to feed themselves"
After running a community garden for over 6 years, we have moved to the northern valleys region, about an hour north of Perth onto a commercial mango farm.

Life at the moment is predominantly being run by the mangoes, but farm life still chugs along in the background too. We have welcomed some more baby lambs, we got out and did our first
Solo worming of the flock, the pig is growing daily and is nearly ready to take her journey to the freezer. We have had what I’m assuming is the mildest February on record, so it’s been far nicer out and about than what January was.

Well folks, with the end of school holidays comes the end of visitors for a while so we can focus on our first mango harvest season. We put a call out for volunteers to help with harvest a few months ago, but after some thought and discussions between Brad and I, we have decided that this year we will tackle the job ourselves. We need to get our processes and procedures sorted out and find what works for us so we can have success in the future. If we get stuck we will absolutely ask for help, but for now, it’s a just us plan. So for February and March, there will be no day trip/over night visitors to the farm, to give us the time to prep, harvest and recover.
Thanks for all the support, see you all on the other side.

I should have waited until I was finished to do a harvest post this morning. Armenian cucumbers, cocozelle zucchini, green capsicums, a couple of probably inedible apples and the edible part of the mango fruit drop collection this morning. I’ll be dropping some of this off to a friend shortly, who is already busy turning the last lot of green mangoes into chutney.

The one downfall of now having honey bees to pollinate for us, we aren’t checking the patch every single day! This is our first Armenian cucumber harvest. We will have to get more vigilant on checking them.

Now that the retic is back up and running, and I finally have a dishwasher installed, I’ve got time in the mornings to get back into the veggie garden. Have spent the past 4 days in here, with help from Baydon on a couple of those days to get some weeding, feeding, mulching, harvesting and planting done. Learning about succession planting is a steep curve for us, and I can say with certainty that I’m not getting it right. We have always got something to eat in here of some description, but it’s far from meeting our needs. This week we have harvested potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and capsicum. We have some cucumbers and zucchini starting to fruit, cue zucchini spam in the coming weeks. This week we have planted more tomatoes, herbs, golden honeydew, my beloved candy red watermelon, leeks, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and celery, in a mix of seeds and home grown seedlings.
Other things growing are chilli, spring onion, kale, strawberries, rhubarb, lots of herbs, lettuce, corn, jicama, beetroot, carrots. I’ve let some carrots go to seed, and as we love eating fennel seeds more than the actual bulb, I’ve let all the fennel go to seed, so at the moment it’s a huge jumble of seed production.

My food preserving game has never been strong, it’s on the to do list to learn more and preserve more. Here is what I’ve been up to lately with preserving. Pickled onions, pickled beetroot, a beetroot relish that we love so much that all going to plan I will be developing into a product I can take to market, and some frozen mulberries that were delish on my porridge this morning.

While I’ve been quiet on the socials lately, farm life has 100% been kicking my butt! With mango harvest season only a few weeks away, of course the retic decided to slowly fail. There wasn’t an option to repair our current system, so we had to replace it. I was assured I would be able to do it myself, which I initially doubted. However, it arrived and Baydon and I gave it a crack. We had some hurdles, but eventually we got it up and running. To say I’m over the moon that we got this done ourselves is an understatement. Having to switch 18 retic stations on and off manually every day the past few weeks has been a frustrating and time consuming job and it took me away from other critical work.

Garlic is all done and dusted for the year. Pretty happy with my first time growing it. Cleaned, trimmed and braided the last two varieties today, and put the biggest bulbs aside for next years crops. Out of 138 cloves planted, I harvested 136 bulbs. So germination was fantastic. Size varied. The purple stripe I got from friends in York was the smallest quantity, but yielded the largest bulbs overall. The Italian red was the slowest to germinate, but was first to be ready to harvest. The giant purple Italian was my largest crop by quantity, but produced quite a lot of not so giant bulbs. So far we have only eaten the Italian red, which has a great flavour. Soon I will make some garlic bread with all 3 garlics to see side by side which we prefer.

As well as the mangoes, we have a range of non commercial fruit trees as well. Most are producing fruit at the moment. Baydon and I have netted as much as we can, as these trees are all well overdue for a prune, so we have done what we can this year to protect the fruit from the 28’s. We have donut peaches (we had our first taste yesterday and they are magical) pink lady and Granny Smith apples, 2 other varieties of peach, a nectarine, a plum, Washington navel and Cara Cara oranges and boysenberry all coming along nicely. This will provide us with fruit between nowish and June I believe. Starting with the donut peaches and finishing us off with the navel oranges. The ice cream bean is flowering, and the mulberries are almost fully finished.
