With love from France 🇫🇷

True Friendships last the strength of time, even those fostered with little words.

My Dear friend Sophie sent me some pictures of her Dads garden at her home in France, Sophie and I met many years ago, and could barely speak a word to each other, yet in nature we both communicated so clearly together, and with the world around us.

Such friends are rare, but my point is a Friendship made in a garden, requires no words and lives in the heart.

Thanks for the beautiful garden share Sophie thinking of you too!!

🌿✨ Dream Garden Sunday ✨🌿

Imagine stepping outside and harvesting dinner from your own backyard.

Fresh herbs for your tea, leafy greens for lunch, edible flowers for your salads, and seasonal produce grown just a few steps from your kitchen door. 🍓🥬🌿

One of the greatest misconceptions I hear is that productive gardens need to be large. In reality, even the smallest space can become a beautiful, abundant garden when it is thoughtfully designed around your lifestyle, climate and goals.

A dream garden isn’t just about how it looks.

It’s about how it makes you feel.

Connected.
Grounded.
Nourished.

What would you love to harvest from your own garden? 💚

🌿❓ ASK CARLA MONDAY ❓🌿

One of the things I love most about gardening is that there is always something new to learn.

Whether you’re growing vegetables, caring for indoor plants, designing a new garden or trying to work out why that one plant refuses to thrive, sometimes all it takes is a little guidance in the right direction.

So let’s start the week together!

💚 Do you have a gardening question?

💚 Is there a plant you’d like identified?

💚 Are you struggling with a problem in your garden?

💚 Not sure what to plant in a particular area?

Drop your question or a photo in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer as many as I can throughout the week. 🌿

No question is too simple.

Every experienced gardener started somewhere.

Let’s learn, grow and create beautiful gardens together. 🌱

🌿 BEFORE & AFTER | A Common Rental Garden Problem

This particular consultation began with a challenge I see surprisingly often.

My client had ongoing concerns with their rental property’s garden, where several plants had failed over time. Unfortunately, the responsibility for maintaining the garden had become a point of tension, despite the fact that many of the original plants had been placed in unsuitable conditions from the very beginning.

Poor plant selection, inappropriate positioning, inadequate soil preparation and unrealistic expectations are all issues I regularly identify during consultations.

In situations like these, a professional garden assessment can help determine whether plant failures are due to tenant maintenance or whether the plants were never given the right conditions to thrive in the first place.

As you can see from the before photos, many of the original plants had completely failed. While there wasn’t much we could do to save them at that stage, I was able to identify the species involved and assess the contributing factors.

Because the property was being prepared for sale, we then moved forward with a budget-friendly mini makeover.

🌿 Suitable replacement plants

🌿 Improved presentation

🌿 Fresh mulch

🌿 Better plant selection for the soil and conditions

🌿 A more attractive and manageable garden overall

The result is a space that not only looks better but is far more suited to its environment.

One of the most important lessons in gardening is this:

The right plant, in the right place, makes all the difference.

If you’re experiencing similar issues in a rental property, or simply aren’t sure why plants continue to struggle despite your best efforts, a consultation can often provide clarity and practical solutions.

☕🌿 COFFEE WITH CARLA

Winter can make our gardens look quiet on the surface… but beneath the soil, some of the most important work of the year is happening.

This week on Coffee with Carla, we’re chatting about why winter is actually the perfect time to prepare your garden for a thriving spring. 🌱

From improving soil health and planning new garden beds, to planting seasonal favourites and supporting local wildlife, the choices we make now can create healthier, more resilient gardens in the months ahead.

Thoughtful design isn’t just about what looks beautiful today. It’s about creating outdoor spaces that continue to grow, evolve and support the way you live. 💜

So grab your favourite warm drink and join me for this week’s garden chat.

🌸🥗 EDIBLE PLANT OF THE WEEK

Violas

My personal favourite… and did you even know they were edible?! 💜

These cheerful little flowers don’t just brighten up the garden through the cooler months. They can also add a beautiful splash of colour to salads, desserts, cakes, cocktails and grazing boards.

Violas thrive during Perth’s cooler seasons and are one of those wonderful plants that blur the line between ornamental beauty and productive gardening.

Why I love them:

🌸 Stunning winter colour

🌸 Edible flowers for creative cooking

🌸 Pollinator friendly

🌸 Perfect for pots and garden beds

🌸 Easy to grow for beginner gardeners

One of my favourite ways to use them is scattered through a fresh garden salad or decorating a homemade cake. They instantly make everything feel a little bit magical. ✨

A gentle reminder though: always ensure any flowers you intend to eat have been grown organically and have not been treated with pesticides or chemicals.

Now tell me…

💜 Did you know Violas were edible?

Or am I about to send half of Perth out into the garden for a taste test? 😂🌿

🌿 One of my favourite spaces in our garden… my Secret Garden.

This little corner began as nothing but pure sand. Over the years, it has become one of the most productive and peaceful spaces in our home through a lot of patience, soil building and thoughtful planting.

Because this area receives very little direct sun, I’ve intentionally used it as a home for many of my more sensitive edible and scented plants. The sheltered conditions allow me to focus on building healthy soil and creating a thriving microclimate.

You’ll notice the “after” photo is looking a little well-loved. My chickens have recently decided this area is their personal excavation project and have been enthusiastically helping themselves to the garden beds! 🐔😂

In truth, it was looking quite a bit fuller before their latest landscaping efforts.

One thing I love about gardening is that no matter how much experience we have, nature is always teaching us something new. For example, despite multiple attempts, I’ve never had much success growing Pennyroyal between these pavers. During our hotter periods, even this shaded space simply becomes too dry and challenging for it to thrive.

Gardening isn’t about perfection.

It’s about observation, learning, adapting and working alongside nature.

I hope you’ve enjoyed a little glimpse into one of my favourite corners of the garden. 🌿

If you’d like to see more of my own garden spaces, I’d love to share them.
